RACING PREVIEW: JULY 30 TO AUGUST 3

RENO, NV (July 29) – As we leave one month and head into another there are plenty of cruises, car shows as well as racing both in our region and on TV to keep any fan happy.

CAR MEETS/CRUISES:

• While Hot August Nights may have been canceled many groups are stepping up and filling the void.

Fernley’s Main Street Cruise is this Friday.

As usual things get rolling Friday evening with the weekly Fernley Quarantine Main Street Cruise. The time is from 7 until 9 p.m. and it goes from the stoplight east, circles the round about then returns.

Saturday’s Classic Car Gathering will be in Virginia City on Saturday.

• Saturday is a marathon car show and cruise night. The day begins with the Classic Car Gathering up in Virginia City. The show runs from 9 until 3 p.m. and is by the Silverland Inn and Suites. Food and prizes plus music will be on hand.

Road Runner of Reno will have a relaxed car show late Saturday afternoon.

After that things move down to Reno for a relaxed car show from 4 until 8 p.m. at Road Rider of Reno. Then the show moves downtown where the Hot Night In August cruise happens.

Saturday ends with the Hot Night in August cruise under the Reno arch.

That cruise is under the arch and runs from 8 p.m. until midnight. Should be a great time to see all sorts of cars on a summer night.

• Sunday is when Reno Cars & Coffee gets the month started with its usually meet at the Kietzke Starbucks. The meet begins at 10 a.m. and there are usually a lot of cars to see.

• The cruise action goes into Monday with the first of three Hot August Nights City Cruises. The first one runs from 3 until 7 p.m. and starts at the Minden Park in Minden.

RACING (REGIONAL):

This Friday and Saturday Rattlesnake Raceway hosts the I-80 Challenge.

• Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon gets the weekend going with the latest round of the I-80 Challenge. Both nights will be full of racing with different classes taking to the track.

Friday night’s action begins at 7 p.m. while it’s a 6 p.m. start for Saturday’s action.

• Top Gun Dragstrip is trying something different this $5 Saturday. The Christmas tree lights, except for staging will be off and the starter uses an arm drop to send the cars off.

This $5 Saturday will have a very different starting procedure at Top Gun Dragstrip.

Each driver will get a slip for his lane only and there are no scoreboards. The event runs from 6 p.m. until Midnight and this is an opportunity to see how well one’s car does in the quarter mile.

• The Reno SCCA is having another Solo event Saturday and Sunday. They probably get going around 9 a.m. and the site is the Reno Public Safety Training Center on Dandini.

Reno SCCA will have two Solo events this weekend. Here drivers race the clock.

Due to a bridge being replaced the only way to get there is to come off Sun Valley and go past the Junior College to the round about then go right from there.

MOTOCROSS:

VCGP press release and it appears the race will happen in October.

• Today I received a press release from the Virginia City Grand Prix. They are still working on the event and are getting a lot of support from the city as well as businesses up there. The event is still scheduled for October 17/18 this fall.

• Nearest place to practice is out at the motocross track at 95 Motor Sports Complex located south of Fernley. Thursday sessions are from 3 until 7 p.m. then 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

• Over the hill MMX Racing is having practice sessions rom 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday then from 9 until 3 p.m. Sunday.

• REP Racing MX has all three of its tracks going for practice.

+  E street has practdice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday but Sunday is      reserved for OTHG.

     + Riverfront has practice Thursday from 5 until 10 p.m. then from 9 until 2      p.m. Sunday.

RACING (NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL):

• This week is a bit slim but on Thursday at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NASCAR Race Hub.

• Friday is pretty empty but one can see re-runs on www.mavtv.com. For live action there are two sites that stream them, one is www.dirtvision.com, a good one for World of Outlaws fans. The other is www.dirtovaltv.com as they deal with dirt tracks.

• Saturday starts early at 5:55 a.m. when ESPN airs Formula 1 qualifying from Silverstone, England. Then at 11 a.m. NBC Sports broadcasts NASCAR America.

At noon Fox Sports 1 has the first day of the MotoAmerica Superbike event from Atlanta.

• Sunday has the Grand Prix of Britain starting at 6:05 a.m. when Formula 1 takes to the historic track at Silverstone.

At this weekend’s NASCAR Cup race at Louden several cars will sport special designs.

At noon NBC Sports airs the NASCAR Cup event from Louden, New Hampshire. Full size cars on a short oval, which is usually a pretty good show and many cars will have special designs.
