RATTLESNAKE RACEWAY AND MORE NEWS

RENO, NV (8-3-2020) – This weekend Rattlesnake Raceway held the current round of the I-80 Challenge. In addition there are other news worthy things going on in the world of motor sports.

Friday night was the first round of the two-day show and on Saturday the next to last race were the Sprint Cars. On the green everyone took off with Jeff Macedo on point.

Only a lap or two went by when one car spin in Turn 4 and was hit by another that could not avoid him. After the track was cleared the green waved again, by now the track had dried out and dust was a bit of a problem.

Moving up from his staring position Trey Walters saw an opening and make the winning pass. There would be one more caution when Dallas Ott spun but on the green Walters took off and left everyone in his dust.

Trey Walters came from his sixth starting position to win the Sprint Car main.

After the race Walters said, “I started sixth, passed cars at the beginning, just trying to find a rhythm, tried pace ourselves and find a nice good open spot to get into the lead. The pass was crazy, I figured ‘I better go now or I may not get another shot.’ The dust was horrible.”

Then he thanked Dave and Cary Walkter as well as Conely Racing and BMRS Hoses.

The Dwarf Cars were a last minute addition to the show. It took two attempts at a start due to a spin on the first lap but when the green waved Joe Fock took off the left the field in his dust.

While Frock won Tim Fitzpatrick was second followed bgy Michael Quilici and Dan Geil. While the victory looked easy apparently it was not.

Joe Frock overcame a slick track to win the Dwarf Car main.

“You know it was tough, the track was super sick and it was tough to see if someone was right in front of you,” Frock said later. “I didn’t know if it was the track or my car but it was like ice out there for us. Luckily everyone else was experiencing the same thing so we just had to cruise around, drive half-throttle and not spin the tires.”

Then he thanked sponsors Damron Racing Las Vegas, R&J Landscaping, Pro Mechanix, Wild Island, Nature’s Bakery, Diatte Racing Innovations and Zoomaluma Graphics.

When the Modified took the green first Jim Turner was on point then Wade Lumsden took the spot. Behind them Cory Sample was moving up and had the leader in his sights.

Cory Sample won the Modified main.

Four cautions slowed the race but in the end Sample scored the victory followed by Chris Nieman and Lumsden.

When the Gen-X feature began Dave Gegenbach briefly was on point until a charging Travis Showe took the spot. Right after the first caution Mikki Beuchat would claim the lead.

The Gen-X winner is Mikki Beuchat.

A late caution when the car of Alex Pettit lost a wheel slowed things down but Beuchat went on to claim the victory.

The Hobby Stock main began with David Ausano on point and being chased by Chris Christiano and John Schilling. The leaders were tearing around the track until he first two were exiting Turn 4 when Kevin Pagell spun hitting Asano’s car and collection Christiano, who would up backwards at the bottom of Turn 1.

The race was stopped as the officials rushed to check on the drivers, who were uninjured. Then it took a few minutes to clear the track.

David Ausano survived a close call and went on to win the Hobby Stock main.

Once racing began Ausano resumed his place in the lead and stormed off to claim the victory. Roger Donahue was second ahead of John Schilling.

Reporters Note: Due to the late hour I had to leave but Jay Bradley won the Bootleggers main.

Next race at Rattlesnake will be a two-day show. On Friday, August 21 the Northern Nevada Modified series will visit and on Saturday it will be a regular points race.
