DIAMOND MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY: I-80 CHALLENGE

SUSANVILLE, CA (Aug.8) – The I-80 Challenge series along with the Dwarf Cars visited Diamond Mountain Speedway this weekend. The result was two days of racing on this dirt bullring.

A last corner pass gave Jimmy Lipke a narrow victory over Nick Trenchor in the IMCA feature.

Saturday’s IMCA A main winner almost didn’t come to the event. But in the end a last second pass won the day for him.

“I wasn’t going to race this weekend and got talked into it last night,” James Lipke said. ” We trashed till about four o’clock this morning, left at 11 and came over to have some fun. It was nice, that was good fun racing and I was happy with second.”

However his fortune changed in the final seconds of the race.

“He, Nick Trenchor, made a little mistake and I was right there to capitalize on it as he pushed a little in 4. I got underneath him and got the lead coming to the checkered.”

Then Lipke thanked his parents, paradise Painting, Vance Roofing, J.Coda Forestry, Left Coast and gave special thanks to Riley Simmons Motor Sports.

Earlier it took four heats to set part of the field. The final spots were decided with a B Main won by Riley Simmons, after that the 20-car field was set for their 20-lap main event.

On the green Lipke and Jeremy Richey led the charge but soon Trenchor used an inside more to grab the point right after a quick caution.

There would be one more caution with a spin on the front straight while another car ended up off the backstretch. That car needed to be towed back to the pits.

On the green Lipke, who had slipped back a bit started moving forward and soon took over second. Now the chase was on.

In the final lap Lipke was right behind leader Trenchor, who made a mistake as they both came through Turn 4 and headed toward the checkered flag. At the line Lipke won by less than a car length.

While the IMCA Modified race was an artistic success the same can’t be said for the Sport Mod feature. At some times it was like bare knuckle boxing.

It took two attempts to get the main going. On the green Jimmy Ford was on point chased by Mike Merritt. Right after the first lap three cars tangled in Turn 3 bringing out the caution.

Once racing resumed the leader was spun by another that took over the lead. (Sadly that driver’s name isn’t in the results or the track’s roster.)

Soon after that a bit of pushing and shoving going through Turns 3 and 4 resulted in a melee in Turn 1. The race had to be stopped for the clean up and one driver that got out of his car was disqualified.

When racing resumed the race had been cut to 15-laps. Behind the lead duo there was a four-way duel for third while second place Jordan Braaton had the leader in his sights.

One more caution bunched the cars and when the green waved there were three laps to go. Unfortunately there was another caution so the green had to wave again.

Jordan Braaten was the Sport Mod winner.

This time Jordan Braaen used an outside pass in Turn 4 to claim the lead and stormed off to the victory.

“I’m from Central Point, Oregon,’ Braaten said during the awards ceremony. “We had a little carnage last night and I ended up pulling the number 12 pill, which is the worst I could have pulled. My goal was to just get through the carnage but winning the race makes it a little bit better.”

Then he thanked The Lord, his girlfriend, parents and sponsors Roger’s Racing Engines, Miller Paints and Razor Chassis.

When the Stock Car main began Royce Goetz and Robert Warf were side-by-side. Soon however Jesse Gonzalez took over second and the chase was on while Robert Miller was lurking in third.

For most of the Stock Car main Royce Goetz had to hold off Jesse Gonzalez.

There were two cautions that slowed the pace but for most of the remaining laps Goetz was holding off Gonzalez. The race was probably decided when Gonzalez slipped in Turn 4 and gave Goetz the breathing room he needed to claim the victory.

“The race was fun, you know Jeff and the crew they prep a really good track,” Goetz said during the awards ceremony. ” I want to thank Winning Attitude Motor Sports, Lyle Hopper, he helps us out with our racing programs, wife can’t ask for a better track, can’t ask for a better night.”

Nine Dwarf Cars showed up to race and they put on their usual display of speed. First on point was Buddy Olschowka while Joe Frock started back in the pack.

Two laps later Frock was third and moving toward the front. Eventually Frock used the high line in Turn 4 to take the lead and score the victory while Olschowka ended up a strong second with Vernon Hubbard in third.

During the Dwarf Car main Joe Frock (right) is about to make the winning pass on Buddy Olschowka.

During the awards, which are held on the front straight, Frock was very pleased with the facility.

“Everything they say about this place is true,” Frock said. “The leaders jumped out there quite a bit. I just had to show some patience and reel them in. I felt I had a car that could do it and I almost waited too long but I planned it just right.

“It’s a great track, so many grooves to choose from. That was the real secret as even my car could go just about anywhere. I felt that whatever lane they didn’t take I could take the other one and be just fine. So my hat’s off to Jeff and the track staff, just a great place to race.”

Then he thanked his pitman, son Tanner Frock as well as sponsors, Damron Racing Las Vegas, R&J Landscaping, Wild Island, Zoomaluma Graphics, Pro Mechanix, Diatte Racing Innovations and others.

Sprint cars are part of the I-80 Challenge and eight of them were present for this night.

When the green waved Jordan Garretson was on point until Trey Walters took over first. Then they ran a few laps side-by-side until Garretson used an inside more inTurn 4 to take the point back.

There were two cautions that slowed the race but on every restart Garretson help the point with Walters not far behind him. They finished in that order with Bruce Ferrier ending up third.

Jordon Garretson takes the checkered flag as he wins the sprint car main.

“The start of the race was pretty fun,” Garretson said. “We started out side-by-side raced through out the corners for two or three laps. Then he got in front of me and pinched me off and then I just fought my way back up.”

Then he thanked his family for their financial and dedication as well as those that support his efforts and sponsors Pony Express Honey Company, Absolute Hose and Fittings and First Gun Oil.

The IMCA B main got the night started but right after that it was the Mini Stock that took to the track. On the green Tom Davis was on point with Tony Quinonez giving chase.

Mini Stock winner was chased by Katelynn Robertson.

After a while Katelynn Roberton took over second but try as she might there would be no catching Davis this night and he scored the victory while Quinonez ended up third.

Unfortunately Davis didn’t show up for the post race awards so this reporter was unable to get any comments from him.

• Friday night was the first day of the event and all the classes but the Dwarf Cars were present.

Once again it took four heats and a B main to set the IMCA A mod field. In the end Riley Simmons was the victor. Craig Nieman claimed the Sport Mod victory.

Royce Goetz was the Stock Car winner while Tom Davis won the Mini Stock feature.

Next up for Diamond Mountain Speedway is Saturday, August 14 when the Pro Stocks show up. Should be a very fast race when they are on the track.
