OVAL TRACK REVIEW: PART 2

RENO, NV (Dec.21, 2020) – Need one more look back at the 2020 Oval Track season. This time won’t have many pictures but there is some news to report.

Diamond Mountain Speedway, like other tracks had a stop-and-start to the season. However there were enough events to crown class champions at the season’s end although for many races spectators weren’t allowed.

Ryan McDaniel won the IMCA Modified class and track championship.

Looking at the IMCA Modified ranks Ryan McDaniel earned the crown witeh 258 points while local Riley Simmons was second with 251 or a scant seven points. Nick Trenchard was third ahead of Chris Nieman in fourth.

Apparently tragedy struck the Sport Mod ranks as the champion Mike Nichols has “rest in peace” by his name. If this is true we send our condolences to his family and friends.

Coming home with 260 points was Craig Nieman while Dennis Crook was third as he was ahead of fourth place Timothy Allerdinys by a scant eight points.

Randy Boyd won the Stock Car class.

The next regular track division is Stock Car, which corresponds to Hobby Stocks in many Nevada tracks. Winning this year’s title was Randy Boyd followed by Shayna Nieman in the runner up spot.

Only four points separated Nieman from third place Robert Warf while fourth place Joe Conroy was just five points behind while Rocky Goetz a point back in fifth.

The last regular class are the Mini Stocks and Krazy Kate is the champion followed by Anthony Hovland, Jason Emmot and Bob Feller.

The late models also had a very close points race as there were only two events. Mark Wauge was the champion by one point over Trent Elliott. The rest were only one point apart.

Like the late models the Pro Stocks only had two events and everyone was just one point apart. Topping the list was Ryan Smith followed by Justin Crocket and Matt Micheli.

There were no points for the Sprint Cars but Trey Walters won that race and Joe Frock won the Dwarf Car event.

Now the track is dark but in the spring racing should return. Hopefully this time the fair board will allow the promoters to have fans so they can have a positive revenue stream.

• Sadly due to the Wuhan Virus lock down the Lovelock Speedway pulled the plug on its entire season. However there is good news for the track.

Long time promoter Ed Macedo has stepped aside and Mike Scott from the Winnemucca Regional Raceway is taking over. This joins both tracks and hopefully will bring Lovelock back to racing this coming season.

Winnemucca is only 72 miles away so good things should be happening for this bullring. Sadly there has been a lack of support from the Fallon racers that are only about 60 miles away.

• Winnemucca Regional Raceway did have a season this year. And their divisions also crowned champions as well.

Cory Sample was the IMCA and track champion at the Winnemucca Regional Raceway.

Cory Sample was the IMCA Modified champion while Marie Curtis topped the Hobby Stock division while Walter Frazier was the Pure Stock champ. In Dwarf Cars Joe Fock topped that class while Rich Innis was the Mini-Modified champ and Kayla Curtis was the Gen-X champion.

The IMCA Stock Car champion was Dillion Lawrence, who came all the way from Salt Lake City. Reno’s Craig Nieman was the IMCA Northern Sport Mod champ while Trey Walters won the Sprint Car title.

• Sadly over the past four to five years it has been virtually impossible to find the points at the 95 Motorsport Complex. Of course they like the others had a stop-and-start season but they did get a few races in.

Hopefully next year points will be available and division champions crowned as a new owner has a new crew and they’ve been working on upgrading this oval track.

That does it for reviewing oval tracks in our area. They will be dark for the next few months. Hopefully in the spring once again these bullrings will echo to the sounds of engines and racing.

REPORTER’S NOTE: The point’s rankings for Diamond Mountain Speedway are after the sponsor list.
