RACING PRVIEW: MAY 27 TO 30

RENO, NV (May26) – This will be an interesting week, not that many cruises but three races in our area. In addition two of the biggest racing events are happening in the mid-west and south-east.

CAR MEETS/CRUISES:

This Friday, starting around 4 p.m. is another cruise in at Summit Racing Equipment in Sparks.

• Things get rolling starting at 4 p.m. when Summit Racing Equipment, located at 960 East Glendale in Sparks has another Friday cruise in.

Fernley Main Street Cruise is this Friday. Great way to end the work week.

• After that there will be another Fernley Main Street Cruise that runs from 6 until 9 p.m. The Wigwam is the meeting place.

Even if you don’t want to cruise bring a chair and you can watch it along with the rest of the people. Both are a great way to unwind and start the holiday weekend.

The reason for so little is both the holiday weekend as well as the fact it is the fifth weekend of the month.

RACING (REGIONAL):

Schedule for the VORRA Yerington250.

• VORRA is hosting a desert race this weekend. Things get going on Friday with a welcome part. Other things happen Saturday including a parade down main street for the racers.

Then on Sunday the racing begins and runs through out the day. Awards are presented Monday before everyone heads home.

• Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon will also be in action this weekend with a Saturday/Sunday show. Racing on Saturday begins at 6 p.m. while Sunday’s show starts at 1 p.m.

RACING & PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):

This is the weekend for the traditional OTHG Nationals at Fernley.

• Probably the biggest race happens this weekend when the Reno Over The Hill Gang hosts the traditional Memorial Day weekend round of the OTHG Nationals. This two-day event brings riders from all across the west.   There are two motos on Saturday and Sunday plus some support races. The first gate drop should be around 9 a.m. and on Saturday there is the traditional BBQ. It’s a fun time with two days or great racing.

• Over the hill MMX Racing in Marysville, California has practice sessions during the entire weekend.   Saturday on the main, sand and kids tracks times are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. then from 9 until 3 p.m. Sunday when the vintage track is open. On Memorial Day, from 9 until 2 p.m. there will be practice on the sand kids tracks.

• REP Racing MX also has practice sessions this weekend.

+ Riverfront MX has practice Thursday from 5 until 10 p.m. but only on the main track. Saturday is      reserved for a private ride day. Sunday, from 9 until 2 is open practice on all the racks.

Prairie City has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday One needs to sign up on line if they want to ride that track. The website is, www.repracingmx.com.

RACING (NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL):

• Thursday gets going at 3 p.m. when Fox Sports 1 has NASCAR Race Hub. Then at 6:30 p.m. Fox Sports 2 has NHRA in 30.   • Friday at 8 a.m. is when NBC Sports has Indy Car Carb Day and final practice. The title comes from when Indy or Champ Cars back then actually used carburetors.

Then at 5:30 p.m. the Camping World Truck Series takes to the oval at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Most of the teams are head quartered in or around Charlotte, North Carolina so this week the teams are home.

• Saturday is a busy day. Fox Sports gets thing rolling at 10 a.m. with the Xfinity race from Charlotte. The network also closes the day at 4 p.m. with the ARCA race at that track.

Things get going when MAVTV airs the first 250 moto at 1 p.m. then at 2 p.m. the first 450 moto. After that NBC sports takes over and show the second250 moto at 3 p.m. followed at 4 p.m. with the second 450 moto.

Sunday starts with the Indy 500. A classic open wheel race for the Indy Cars. Photo courtesy – sportingnews.com.

• Sunday starts early at 8 a.m. when NBC broadcasts the Indy 500 from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This classic Indy Car race has a worldwide audience and includes many international drivers.

Then at 3 p.m. Fox has the NASCAR Cup – Coco Cola 600 from Charlotte Motor Speedway. While the Indy Cars do 500 miles on a two and a half mile track the NASCAR drivers race for 600 miles on a one and a half mile track. The 600 usually runs into the evening hours.

In addition to those two major races at 2 p.m. NBC Sports has a Moto GP race from Italy. This series is akin to Formula 1 in the 4-wheel world.   Finally CBS Sports at 4 p.m. has the World of Outlaws race from Kokomo followed at 4:30 p.m. with World of Outlaws Late Models from Farmer City.

That’s it for this weekend. Want everyone to have a safe and happy time. However on Monday be sure to take a few moments to remember and honor the memories of those service men and women that have given their lives for our country. That’s what Memorial Day is all about. See you next week.

We now have eight very appreciated sponsors supporting this site. Please patronize them as they support your sport and help nvracingnews continue. And let them know you heard about them through this site.

Tread Connection is our newest sponsor and Blake Sobiloff owns the local franchise. The business brings the tire store to the customer so they don’t have to take time off work or even leave home.

Once the tires are ordered Sobiloff picks them up and arrives where the customer’s car is in a van packed with state of the art equipment. He observes all safety precautions and it’s no contact so tires can be chosen and paid for online.

Another service he provides is scanning tires as that will tell if any alignment is needed. A useful service for fleet owners so they won’t find several vehicles need new tires at once. There are discounts for First Responders, veterans as well as active duty military and members of the National Guard and Reserves.

His primary area is Reno and Sparks and one can either go to the Face Book page or check the website at www.treadconnection.com. The direct line to the business is 775-870-3600.

Next sponsor is G.I.S.L Land Services that, while having a global client base it has a Western U.S.A. Focus. Owner Greg Ekins is a long time off road motorcycle racer competing in the MRANN Series as well as the AMA National Hare and Hound series.

Among the services offers are Surface and Mineral Title Reviews and Cartographic Services. The website is www.gislandservices.com.

Next sponsor is General Transmission and Power Train Specialists owned by former motorcycle racer Pete Attashian. The shop is located at 2515 Sutro Street in Reno, a few blocks below Hug High School.

The shop services older and new transmissions and how has a section for high performance units and those used in towing. Phone number is 775-786-5888 and the shop’s website is www.generaltransmissionreno.com.

Racing photographer Melissa Coker is another sponsor. If you raced at Summit in Elko, Battle Mountain, Lovelock, Rattlesnake Raceway or Diamond Mountain Speedway she probably has a photograph of your car on the track.

She’s also been at the Duel in the Desert, Northern Nevada Modified Tour, Wild West Tour and the IMCA Super Nationals. She produces hero cards and memory books. To see her collections or to place an order, check www.melissasoutonalimb.smugmug.com.
