RACING PREVIEW: AUGUST 19 TO 22

RENO, NV (Aug. 18) — Racing Preview this week is full of events, both live and on TV as well as the Internet. As summer winds down its time for racers to gather all the points they can and if possible to qualify for playoffs in the series that have them.

CAR MEETS & CRUISE INS:

Next to last $5 Friday at Top Guy is this week. Time to get it on.

• While it might not be a regular car meet Top Gun Dragstrip has its next to last $5 Fridays and times are from 6 until midnight. For just $15 more one can test their car, find out how fast it will really go or just grudge race with friends.

• Thursday has a cruise in at the Pizza Baron in Reno. Times are 6 to 8 p.m. and there are raffle prizes as well as music and a price for the “car of the week.”

• There is no Friday night cruise in Fernley this week.

Fallon Cars & Coffee has a meet Saturday morning.

• On Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m. Fallon Cars & Coffee has a cruise in at Telegraph Coffee and Tap. The location is 1805 W. Williams Avenue.

• Later Saturday afternoon, from 5 until 8 p.m., there is a cruise in at the Mid Town area of Reno. Parking is at Sports West and there is entertainment was well as Monster Trike Racing.

• Sunday is a busy day in Carson City as their are a pair of cruise ins. Carson Mall’s Cars & Donuts begins at 9:45 a.m. and the first 24 people get free donuts.

A little further way, at 3300 U.S. Highway 50 East, Carson Cars & Coffee has a meet beginning at 10 a.m. and going until noon.

• Sunday is when Sparks Cars & Coffee has its second meet of the month. Things get going at 10 a.m. and the location is the parking lot by Buffalo Wild Wings.

•Then from noon until 4 p.m. Final Draught Bottles and Taps, located at 5318 Sparks Blvd has a car show open to everyone. There is a prize for the best looking cars and trucks.

• And if that isn’t enough on Monday the Pizza Factory in Spanish Springs has a cruise in from 5 p.m. until dark. Locaton is 9725 Pyramid Way, suite 801 and there will be music, raffles and video games for the kids.

RACING (REGIONAL):

• Elko Summit Raceway has a two-day show this weekend. Gate open at 3 p.m. and racing begins at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

This weekend Top Gun Dragstrip is running two rounds that were postponed by summer’s heat.

• Top Gun Dragstrip is running the Summit ET rounds 7 & 8 this Saturday and Sunday as well as Junior Dragsters. Things get going around 9 a.m. and after everyone gets timed in the elimination rounds begins.

• Futher south Tonopah Speedway is hosting a two-day show as well. Starting times should be 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

• The scheduled races at Diamond Mountain Speedway have been canceled. In fact Highway 395 is closed at the junction with Highway 70. At this time it is unknown of the canceled races can be rescheduled.

Over in Quincy, the American Valley Speedway is also in limbo. Both tracks are on fairgrounds that are being used to stage equipment used to fight the Dixie fire.

RACING & PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):

•MMX Racing has practice this weekend. Saturday’s hours are from 9 until 2 p.m. on the main, sand and kid tracks. Sunday’s times are from 9 until 3 p.m. and the vintage track is added to the mix.

• REP Racing MX also has practice, ride days and racing on its tracks.

+ Prairie City has practice Friday from 9 until 2 p.m. then Saturday and Sunday are reserved for private ride days. After that the track is closed until after the upcoming Hangtown Nationals.

+ Riverfront MX has practice from 5 until 10 p.m. Thursday. Saturday is when Round 6 of the Summer Night Series is run. Gates open at noon, practice is at 4 p.m. with racing to follow. Sunday from 9 until 2 p.m. is open practice on all tracks.

RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL):

• Thursday starts early at 4:45 a.m. when www.motortrendondemand.com starts covering qualifying from the 24 Hours of LeMans. They also have coverage of the German Touring Car event and the broadcast goes through most of the day.

At 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 air NASCAR Race Hub.

• Friday, at 3 p.m., www.mavtv.com has the2021 ARCA Series race from Michigan.

Fox Sports 1 has two events with the first at 4 p.m. being Qualifying Show #1 from the NHRA Nationals in Brainerd. The at 6 p.m. the network show the Camping World Truck race from Gateway.

• Saturday is a busy day and starts at 6:15 a.m. when motor trend on demand starts its coverage of the 89th running of the 24 Hours of Lemans.

• This week the Lucas Oil Motocross Series is at Budds Creek and if one has subscribed to Peacock they won’t have to do any channel switching.

At 7 a.m. Peacock has practice and qualifying. Then mavtv picked up the load and at 10 a.m. has the first 250 moto followed at 11 by the first 450 moto. At noon mavtv airs the second 250 moto while at 1 p.m. NBC Sports has the second moto.

Now comes the interesting part as, according to the schedule, at 12:30 p.m. NBC Sports is going to broadcast the Xfinity race from Michigan. Then at 5:30 p.m. the network will air the INDY Car race from Madison.

• Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. is when the twice-around-the-clock 24 hours of LeMans broadcast ends on motor trend on demand.

At 9 a.m. Fox Sports 1 has the second NHRA Qualifying show then at noon Fox has the final rounds from the Lucas Oil Nationals. This is the last race before the U.S. Nationals. At noon NBC Sports will air the NASCAR Cup race from Michigan as the series goes back to the ovals.

That’s it for this weekend. If possible get out and see either a car meet or a race, there is nothing like seeing it live. You’ll meet some great people and have a good time.
