RACING PREVIEW: SEPTEMBER 23 TO 24

RENO, NV (Sept. 22) — Autumn has begun and that means local racing is winding down, except for motorcycles, and professional series are heading toward their championships. Also car meets and cruises are mostly on the weekends now.

CAR & MOTORCYCLE MEETS:

• Biggest event of the weekend is Street Vibrations – Fall Rally, it turns this area into Sturgis West. This year it’s in the art section of 4th street west of downtown as well as in Carson City and Virginia City.

Things get going Thursday and go into late afternoon on Sunday. For further information please check, www.roadshowsreno.com.

Fallon Cars & Coffee has its second meet of the month this Saturday

• Fallon Cars & Coffee has its second meet of the month Saturday. It starts at 9:30 a.m. and is at the Telegraph Coffee & Top located at 1805 W. Williams Avenue.

The Silverado Classic car show is this Saturday.

• In Fernley, about that same time is the Silverado Classic Car Show. This annual car show is at the Silverado Casino, just off the freeway.

1st Choice Automotive and Restoration celebrats is grand opening Saturday.

• In Sparks on Saturday, the 1st Choice Automotive and Restoration, located at 850 Marietta Way, is celebrating its grand opening. The car show runs from 10 until 3 p.m. and all types of cars are welcome.

• Sunday morning gets going when Sparks Cars & Coffee has a meet starting around 9:30 a.m. by Buffalo Wild Wings. It’s located by the Sparks Target store.

Northern Nevada Classics and Summit Racing team up to help the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission on Sunday.

• Then at noon Northern Nevada Classics teams up with Summit Racing, on East Glendale in Sparks, to host a cruise benefiting the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission. While donations are not required they are welcome and the mission has a need for canned goods.

• If you live south of Reno be sure to check the Face Book page for Carson Cars & Coffee. Then tend to have pop up events.

The National Automobile Museum is intersted in those having muscle cars for a future exhibit.

• Own a muscle car, vintage 1963 to 1972? If so the National Auto Museum might want to talk to you. They are looking for muscle cars for a future exhibit and it would be a great way to show off your car.

RACING (REGIONAL):

Rattlesnake Raceway hosts a two-day show this weekend. One is a special Hobby Stock race.

• Biggest race locally is at Rattlesnake Raceway, located just east of downtown Fallon. On Friday the show has cars and tough trucks.

Saturday’s show has cars, trucks and a special Hobby Stock race. It’s the Dennis Johnson Memorial and has a $2,500 prize for the winner. Should be a wild race as this class usually never has prizes that big.

Best in the Desert series is having a double points race for buggies and trucks this weekend.

• To the south at Laughlin, Nevada the Best in the Desert Series has a double points race for trucks and buggies. Time trials are Thursday while Friday is filled with meetings and any late registrations.

Saturday is race day and there are five of them, one for each class, with the first getting the green flag at 7:30 a.m. and the final one is for the trucks. For further information please check, www.bitd.com.

RACING & PRACTICE (MOTORCYCLES):

Mason Valley Dirt Squirts get the fall MRANN season going this weekend.

• Mason Valley Dirt Squirts gets MRANN’s fall season going with the Crazy 8 Hustle event. After a few years absence the location is east of Yerington.

As usual the Pee Wee racers get Saturday going at 9 a.m. then at 10:30 a.m. there is a race combining Minis/65c/Women/Vintage and Bombers on a short course. Then on Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. the big bikes take to the long course. For further information go to, www.racemrann.com.

• MMX Racing has Saturday practice from 9 until 2 p.m. on the main, sand and kid tracks. Then on Sunday, from 9 until 3 p.m., the vintage track is added to the mix.

• Prairie City also has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

• Riverfront MX Park has Thursday practice from 5 until 10 p.m. then Friday is for camping as this is a race weekend. The track is hosting a OTHG event and on Saturday gates open at 8 a.m. with practice from 9 until 2 p.m.

RACING (NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL):

• Thursday is another slow day but at 8 a.m. ESPN3.com has Formula 1 Weekend Preview from Russia. Then at 3 p.m. Fox Sports has NASCAR Race Hub.

• Friday starts on www.imsa.tv at 4:45 p.m. when IMSA Weathertech Sportcar Championship series has qualifying from Long Beach. Then at 4 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has Qualifying Show #1 from the NHRA Mid-West National then at 6 p.m. the network airs the Camping World Truck Series race from Las Vegas.

• Saturday get rolling at 4:55 a.m. when ESPN2 has Formula 1 qualifying from Russia. The at noon NBC Sports has Indy Car qualifying from Long Beach.

• Sunday, starting at 4:55 a.m. ESPN2 has the Formula 1 race from Russia. At 10 a.m. Fox Sports 1 has Qualifying Show #2 then at 11 a.m. airs the final rounds from the NHRA Mid-West Nationals at Madison, Illinois.

NBC Sports then takes over for two races. The first starts at 12:30 p.m. as the Indy Cars take to the streets of Long Beach. Racing between walls means the drivers have to be inch perfect.

Finally at 4 p.m. the network airs the NASCAR Cup race from Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It’s another elimination race so drivers in contention need a good race.

That does it for this weekend. Do try and see a race in person if you can. There is nothing like it and one doesn’t have to sit through commercials.
