RENO, NV (Jan. 16) — Reno Cars & Coffee had its second meet of the month. This time it was at the Human Bean, by the corner of Keitzke and Moana Lane.
Good weather brought a mix of cars and one of them was a Jeep owned by Kathy Dufek. In fact her jacket almost matched her ride’s paint color.
“It’s a 2020 Jeep Rubicon, they said it’s pink but kind of raspberry to me,” she said. “My husband ordered it for me and surprised me with it for Christmas.
She added that this past Christmas he gave her a Tesla.
“My husband can’t leave anything alone,” she said with a chuckle. “We put some light bars on it, new bumper, winch, halo lights, some side bars to step up inside as it is awkward to step up inside there.
Added are LED taillights, LED headlights and she thanked the folks at Jeep Lithia for getting a new bracket for the rear license plate as its site in the middle of the rear mounted spare tire.
Looking at the cars on display, this time there was a long BMW row with various models lined up for people to inspect them.
There was another very different Jeep owned by Mark Gray.
It’s a ’81 CJ-5 with a 98 4.0 and 5-speed from a Grand Cherokee,” he said “Got Harlan Sharp roller rockers, comp cam and everything is ARP (Bolts for the heads and other things.). It’s basically ready for Baja but it’s my daily driver.
“More solid than what came out of the factory. Everything under the shell is new, everything on the outside is stock so its very much a sleeper. I don’t have a lift on it so it’s exactly like it came off the showroom floor except the motor and transmission.”
While it is his daily driver as a rock hound he uses it to get to mines and he’s a member of the Reno Gem Society. He added it’s used carefully when driven off road.
Gray also belongs to Northern Nevada Classics as well as Reno Cars & Coffee. He added the AMC group has asked him to join them.
“I haven’t been able to get it out much because I work so much. She is a project everything I’m doing to her I’m doing out of my own pocket so it takes a while,” he said.
At the meet there were also several Corvettes as well as more Jeeps.
Another special car on display, was brought by Michael McGill. He explained it actually belongs to his mother Judy LaCross and has an interesting history.
“It’s a 2014 Holman & Moody Special Mustang and they set it up for road racing,” he said. “I haven’t had it on a road course, my mom had. It’s my inheritance basically as she puts it. She goes down to Thunder Hill and runs it there.”
He related how one time his mother scared to death one of the instructors that was riding with her.
“She came down the front straightaway and he kept telling her, ‘mam you might want to start braking,’ and she’d tell him not yet, ‘ I’ve got plenty of brake in this thing,’” he related. “ And after his ride he gets out and starts looking the car over not realizing it was the Holman & Moody racetrack car. This car has what it has in it and it was meant for what she was doing.”
He explained that after his mother bought the car it was sent to the Holman & Moody shop in Charlotte, North Carolina. They striped out all the suspension and put their race components into it.
When the car was picked up there was a waiver she signed stating this is a road racecar, one that is street legal to drive on the streets.
“It’s #13 of 25 built and its one of nine that are still left in the states,” he said. “We went to Vegas in 2018 to Mustangs On The Strip. She was the first ticket drawn in a prize raffle and she won the half off purchase and install of the Kenny Bell Supercharger System.
“So now we have a Kenny Bell Supercharger system put on it too. This is not one you want to play around at a stop light with as it’s a total sleeper. Has a really stock mellow sound to it until you get on it and it starts to open up and come alive.”
Of course the next question was how is it on the Mt. Rose Highway.
“Oh my God, this thing is so fun,” he said. “Cause it just hugs the road and as you accelerate the car actually lowers down with the suspension that’s in it. So it’s a lot of fun to drive on the streets.”
The next meet for Reno Cars & Coffee is on February 6 at the Keitzke Starbucks. This usually has a large turn out and as usual, 10 a.m. is when things get rolling.
