DIAMOND MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY PLUS ZOO CRUISE

SUSANVILLE, CA. (April 9) — Diamond Mountain Speedway as in action this weekend. There was a show Friday and Saturday and on Sunday there was a cruise to help the Northern Nevada Zoological Society.

On a windy and cool Saturday night the Mini Stocks began the mains after all the heats had been completed. First on point after the start was Anthony Hovland being chased by second place Nick Boucher.

Nick Boucher won the Mini Stock main.

There were two cautions that slowed the pace but each time the green waved again Boucher was leading the charge although Bob Kelly was giving chase. In the end Boucher scored the victory followed by Kelly and third place Matt Canada.

Next up were the Northern Sport Mods and it took two attempts to get the race rolling. On the second green Shayna Nieman led  the charge but soon has Colton Chew after her.

There was an early caution and Cole Olexiewicz made a charge that took him to the lead. After the next caution it was Olexiewicz and Ryan Peery leading the pack.

Once he got in front there was no catching Sport Mod winner Ryan Peery.

There would be three more cautions but by then Peery had claimed the point and took off when the green waved again. In the end it was Peery, Matt Sanders and Chew that claimed the first three places.

At the trophy presentation Peery said, “The very beginning of the race was pretty exciting, a lot of cars crossing over each other. I was just trying to hang on and wait for them to move out of the way.

Ryan Perry won the Sport Mod main.

“Once I saw an opening went to the top, just passed everybody and got third. After one of the first couple of restarts I went to the lead and got the lead”

Then he thanked sponsors Paradise Painting, Bleu Frog Realty as well as A&J Farms.

Next up were the Street Stocks and soon after the green waved Craig Nieman grabbed the lead. Two quick cautions would slow the pace but on every restart Nieman took the lead.

For many laps Craig Nieman and Royce Goetz (39) dueled for the lead. In the end Nieman won the race.

Behind him Royce Goetz had moved through the pack and eventually took over second, and the chase was on. For several laps Goetz and Nieman exchanged the lead as they were either side-by-side or nose-to-tail.

Two more cautions slowed things but up front it was the Nieman/Goetz show as they battled for the win. In the end Nieman won the battle and took the victory followed by Goetz and Jacob Dias.

Later Nieman said, “It was a lot of fun started 11th and slowly picked our way up to the front. It slicked off pretty good car was good on the bottom and let everybody drift up.”

Then he thanked his wife Shayna as well as friends Clair and Allen Schumacker as well as Jason and Becky Combs.

This time the IMCA Modifieds or A Mods ran next and when the green waved 15 of them took off. First on point was Paris Archie and Wade Kennemore.

Riley Simmons on his way to winning the IMCA Modified feature.

Two cautions slowed things down and after the last restart Archie was being challenged by Riley Simmons. After a few laps of side-by-side racing Simmons edged his way into the lead. From there Simmons extended his lead while Archie and Chris Nieman disputed second place and they finished in that order.

Reporters Note: Due to operator error, mine, I didn’t get quoted from Simmons. My apologies to him but I did use the following that he posted on his Face Book page.

Riley Simmons, sporting his new driver’s suit picks up the trophy for winning the IMCA Modified feature.

“2nd last night from 10th and picked up the win tonight from 11th Huge thank you to everyone that’s apart of my racing program. Had to break in the fresh new Wehrs Machine & Racing Products suit.”

Finishing the night’s racing were the IMCA Stock Cars and nine of them took the green. However due to spins in Turn 2 as well as Turn 3 a restart was ordered.

Once everyone got back into their proper order the green waved again and they all took off. Up front Richard Longacre was on point with Rusty McMillian in second.

Once he got the lead Jesse Gonzalez (52) was on a role and won the IMCA Stock Car feature.

Soon McMillan and Longacre swapped the lead while behind them Jesse Gonzalez was moving toward the front. Soon Gonzalez had Longacre in his sights and used an outside move in Turn 2 to take the lead.

Right after a caution Jeff Olschowka took the point but soon slowed, causing a caution and headed for the pits. This gave Gonzalez a pretty sizeable lead.

When the final caution ended Gonzalez took off with Longacre in pursuit. They finished in that order with Terry Kennemore coming home in third.

Asked about the race Gonzalez said,  “You know I do better when I’m chasing somebody rather than racing out front by myself. I didn’t now where everybody was so it was just hard driving.”

Then he thanked sponsors, Hard Rock Equipment, 31 Ranch, Old Iron Powder Coating and TBC Construction.

There was another complete show Friday evening and the winners were, Wade Kennemore in IMCA Modified and Colton Chew in IMCA Northern Sportmod.

Other winners were Tom Davis in Mini Stock, Royce Goetz scored a double as he won in Street Stocks and in the IMCA Stock Car division.

Next up for Diamond Mountain Speedway is Easter Saturday, April 16. Starting time is 6 p.m. and there is a special treat for the youngster, an Easter Egg Hunt on the infield before the main races start.

• On Sunday there was a special event as the Northern Nevada Classics organized a charity cruise for a local institution.

Northern Nevada Classic president stands by his vintage Mustang. He helped organized the Zoo cruise on Sunday.

Kevin Degregori, the club’s president said, “It’s our third annual charity cruise for the Sierra Nevada Zoo out towards Red Rock. We do it every year to try to keep up with all the animals, keep up the property and keep them running.”

The convoy, only part of it, heads down Glendale on its way to the Nothern Nevada Zoo.

Two rows of cars, trucks and other vehicles lined up on Glendale by Summit Racing. At noon the cruise began with a line of vehicles stretching past the intersection with McCarran.
