SHOOTOUT AT JESUP: MRANN ROUND 3

JESUP, NV (May 15) — This weekend the Rimbenders Motorcycle Club hosted The Big Head Yellow Head 100. The event returned to an area that hasn’t been visited for several years

On Sunday all the racers lined up according to the group they belonged in, Experts, Amateurs and Novice. Ahead of them the Banner Crew was ready to start things.

The Banner Crew and their fans are ready to launch Sunday’s races.

The starts are dead engine and when the banner is raised everyone gets ready. Once it drops riders kick their mounts to life and head into a funnel like area that leads them onto the course. While the first two lines got through pretty cleanly the Novice start had a bottleneck there but everyone was able to get going.

Up front Russel Tonjum was on point with the pack giving chase. At the end of the first lap the first four were spread out over for minutes while fifth place was four minutes behind them.

Sunday was a great day for Russel Tonjum as he lead the big bike race from banner to checkered.

After a quick pit stop, to refuel and maybe get a fast drink of water the riders went through the scoring loop and headed out onto the course. To be classed as a finisher a rider had to complete one of the almost 50 miles laps.

For those needing it around the half-way point was alternate fuel so they could get some and not run out of fuel before the pits. With the warm being warm and dry dust could be a problem but seems most handled it well.

At the end Tonjum had an elapsed time of 2:36:00 while runner up Cason Calder was a bit further back with at time of 2:39:58 and third place Henry Anderson had a time of 2:42.37.

After catching his breath Tonjum said, “It was good, really good, a true desert race. Just had to be smart, super smart. There’s not many lines to choose from. I kept on two all day and that’s good for me and it paid off.”

A tired but delighted Russel Tonjum stands after winning Sunday’s overall victory.

Then he thanked Gilbert at TBT, Dennis at RMS, Layne at BVH, Mickey Absolute Drain service, Nate at DDC, Ryan with Galper, West Coast Trail Works, and everybody that’s supports him including his family and girl friend.

Seventh placed Preston Pheasant was the first4-Stroke Expert to reach the finish. Madden Kirsch, who finished 10th was the first Amateur to complete two laps. Moving up the age ladder 11th place Chris Mass topped the 40+ Expert group while 12th place Irving Powers was the first 30+ Expert to reach the finish.

Jack Reader, who topped the 50+ Expert class, finished 16th overall on Sunday.

Another veteran Jack Reader topped the 50+ Expert class with his 16th place finish. There are a group of veterans that compete in these races  Ending up in 92nd place was Peter Mayforth, who races in the Over 60 group. For him it was a marathon as his elapsed time was 4:24:34.

Christina Courtney finished 41st and was the first Sunday Woman Amatuer to complete two laps.

There were also women in the field and the highest placed finisher was Christina Courtney. She ended up in 41st place with a time of 3:25:09.

When the banner dropped 166 riders took off and at the finish 155 either made one lap or finished both laps.

For most of the weekend the Medics weren’t needed but sadly on Sunday one rider crashed hard enough to require medical attention. The ambulance crew took care of until Care Flight arrived and air lifted him to the Trauma Center at Renown in Reno. His condition was unknown when this was posted.

• Saturday was the first race day of the weekend. As usual at a MRANN event the Pee Wee’s, youngest racers, go first on a short course for 45 minutes.

Pee Wee racer, in the 65 Novice class, was first overall in his Saturday race..

At the checkered Nathan Danner, riding in the 65 Novice class was first over with Weston Starr in second. Duke Arbogast, who ended up 10th was the first 7+ Pee Wee finisher while the first 6 and Under finisher was 12th placed Ducati Fayet.

Brighton Stern topped the 4-Stroke group with his 17th place finish. When the banner dropped 47 riders took off and at the end 44 finished the entire 45-minute race.

After a brief pause so the sweep riders could make sure all the Pee Wee racers were off the course it was time for the Mini/Women event. This was on a longer course and the race was 90 minutes long.

Once the banner dropped they were off. Up front Jesse Miller was on a mission and he led from banner to checkered.

Jesse Miller lead from banner to checkered as he won the Mini/Saturday Women race.

At the end Miller had an elapsed time of 1:49:55 while runner up Carson Key’s time was 1:53:54. The top 6 riders completed three laps while the next 48 completed two laps.

After taking the checkered Miller, who also raced on Sunday, said, “I got a good hole shot and just held it all the way to the finish. No mistakes and kept it on two wheels.

“It was pretty dusty when I was catching some lappers. It was rocky a few miles out but other than that okay although there’s a few whoops but not bad.“

Then he thanked his parents, Dunlop, RMS and McCoy’s Off Road.

Titan Allen was the first Mini Amateur to reach the finish line.

The first Mini Amateur was third place Titan Allen. In 12th place was the first Saturday Women Expert Cassie Searle while the first 65 Expert was 20th place Walker Vandover.

Cassie Searle finished 12th in Saturday’s Mini Race and was the first Saturday Woman Expert.

When the banner dropped 80 took off and at the end 75 were classed as finishers. In the group were some first time racers and they all seemed to have had quite a confidence building day.
