NORTHERN NEVADA KART CLUB: ROUND 6

STEAD, NV (July 7) — Desert Park Raceway echoed with the sound of racing Sunday. The occasion was round six of the 2022 season for the Northern Nevada Kart Club.

In the Kid Kart main Davey Jorgenson was the first to complete six laps.

As usual the youngsters in the Kid Kart Class raced in the first main of the day. This time there were three of them and when the green lights came on Jameson Judd and Davey Jorgenson took off while Hunter Nelson, who is very fast, was held to give them a head start.

Hunter Nelson’s race in the Kid Kart main ended with mechanical problems.

After the first lap both Jorgenson and Judd were pretty close while Nelson was catching them. Unfortunately Nelson had mechanical problems and was unable to finish all six laps.

Jameson Judd was the second Kid Kart to complete all six laps.

By then Jorgenson had gotten around Judd and would reach the finish first. Judd was the second to compete all six laps.  In the Kid Kart class they aren’t listed in the usual finishing position but if they complete all the laps.

Next up was the Superstock/Tillotson main. All the rest of the mains were 12-laps.  When the race started Alec Beaudoin took off with Brud Beaudoin and Edward Atkins giving chase.

Eventual Super Stock winner Edward Atkins (13a) leads Alec Beaudoin. They had the closest finish of the day.

After several laps of running close Atkins took the point. After that he and Alec Beaudoin would swap the lead a few times. Their duel ended with the closest race of the day as Atkins reached the checkered flag with a margin of 0.089 seconds ahead of runner up Beaudoin.

After the post-race weigh in Atkins said, “It was a good race, Alec was kind enough to slow down as he had such a huge lead. On the first lap I took out my teammate, never any good and I apologize for that. But Alec brought it back to us and we had a race after that.”

Then he thanked Cole Nelson Racing and his wife Kelly, who takes care of the scales.

Next up were the Junior II racers. These are the young drivers that will eventually go into one of the adult classes within a few years.

On the green Brooks Anderline was on point with Cooper Perez and Andrew Hitchock giving chase. Soon Carter Knight made it a four-way duel for the lead. Eventually Hitchock was able to get second and the chase was on.

On their way to posting the second closest finish of the day Junior II winner Brooks Anderline is chased by Andrew Hitchcock.

For the rest of the race Anderline and Hitchock were little more than a foot or two apart. Hitchock did try a challenge but Anderline was able to hold on to the lead. In the end they posted the second closest finish of the day with Anderline crossing the finish just 0.285 seconds ahead of Hitchcock.

After the race Anderline said, “ Got out there with a little bit of lead, starting making little mistakes but other than that pretty smooth race. Got out front, led the whole thing.”

Then he thanked Cashed Out Racing, C&R, Invader Engines and his parents.

The KA100/TAG mains combine two groups of karts. The TAG group gets the green flag first then about 30 or seconds later the KA100 takes the green.

Steve Ryckebosch beat his brother Mike to win the overall and TAG class in their main.

Up front Steve Ryckebosch was on point while his brother Mike held down second. It would be a family affair as they left everyone in their wake, finished in that order about a second and a half apart.

Behind them it was a different story in the KA100 ranks. Stevie-Ray Rosario led that group while Nat Sombatsiri and Deeahme Malone were chasing him.

Early in the race Stevie-Ray Rosario leads Nat Sombatsiri and eventual winner Deeahme Malone.

Eventually Malone was able to get by and take the lead of that group with Rosario behind him and Sombatsiri in third. They would finish in that order.

After the race Steve Ryckebosch said, “It was really good, my tires started going away about mid-way and my wife was going like this (clapping hands) which means Michael was on my butt.  So I kept going and stayed ahead of him.”

Then he thanked his wife Lynn and both of his dogs, Enzo and Catty.

Then it was time to talk with the KA100 winner Malone.

“I won again, this one was a really amazing race, probably better than the other races. I thought it was amazing. Had a fast kart thanks to my mechanic dad. A great race, thinking I want to do that again,” he said.

Next the field switched to the younger drivers in Junior 1. This is the next step after Kid Kart and gives the drivers experience with a more powerful kart.

On the green four spun in Turn 1 but they all were able to get going again. Up front the trio of Kayden Williams, Skylar Gagnon and Jeremiah Nobels started a three-way duel for the lead.

Early in the Junior 1 main Kayden Williams leads Skylar Gagnon and eventual winner Jeremiah Nobles.

Eventually the duo of Williams and Gagnon pulled away and were having their own private duel for the lead. Nobles as solo in third but not that far behind the leaders.

In the final laps Gagnon was on point with Williams right behind him. Going into Tic-Tac-Toe, the final left-right-left complex leading onto the front straight they had contact and both spun. Behind them Nobles whizzed past as did Jeremy Heath so they finished one-two. Gagnon got going and ended up third while Williams also got going and finished fourth.

After the race Nobels almost didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know what to say about when he saw what happened but said it felt “Good,” after he won. Then he thanked his grandparents, brothers that help him and the Invader team.

When the green waved to start the LO206 Senior main Giovanni L. Medina was on point with Issac Bourque close behind him. Soon Bourque, in his Purple People Eater kart took over the lead and left everyone in his wake.

Issac Bourque on his way to winning the LO206 Senior Main.

For Bourque these races are test runs for something he’s planning on doing later. He explained this after winning while Medina ended up second ahead of third place Nathan Heath.

Further down the finishers there was a family duel. In the end Heavyn Hill ended up fourth with her grandfather Steve Dow close behind in fifth.

“It was very fun, testing for a Washington race,” Bourque said. “We’re just changing different set ups, dropping axel, and seeing what works best with the kart right now. Just all these set ups for the next race in Washington in two weeks.”

Next up was the LO206 Heavy, which usually is the largest class. On this day 13 racers took the green and stormed into Turn 1.

Up front it became a two-driver duel for the lead. Brandon Arace was on point with Rachael Williams close behind him.  Eventually there was some space between them but in the final laps Williams closed in.

For most of the LO205 Heavy race winner Brandon Arace was chased by Rachael Williams.

Unfortunately about two or three laps from the end she had a slide going through Tic-Tac-Toe.  While she caught it the incident dropped her about five seconds back. While she made up some of the time Arace ended up almost three and a half seconds ahead of her at the checkered flag.

After the race Arace said, “So fun. I looked back at one point and she came up on my tail pretty good. But we locked it in, kept running my line and finish it off.

“I want to thank Team Invader, Cole Nelson for building a beautiful kart, Jeff Nelson for the Mona Lisa engine,my dad for wrenching on the kart and buddy Walter for practicing with me.”

Finally the day ended with the fastest class, the shifters. They use a standing start and when the lights turn green Zeke Corson took off with Todd Thompson giving chase.

Zeke Corson left everyone in his wake as he won the Shifter main.

Corson then proceeded to extend his lead while behind him it became a four-way duel for second. Despite the challenges Thompson hung on to second lap after lap.

Todd Thompson finished second in the shifter main but had to hold off Adam Auerback, Mitch Kennedy andJaff Wamre.

In the end he finished second followed by Adam Auerbach, Mitch Kennedy and Jeff Wamre. The spread from second to fifth was just under a second.

After the post-race weigh in Corson said, “That was actually good. We had some excellent changes done to the track, smoothing it out in the last couple of weeks had some grinding done and it created a little bit of slickness so it just made it more challenging.

“You had to tip toe through some things and keep your head about you. I just kind of found my happy place, my comfort zone and just stayed there and tried not to push too hard and drive over my head.”

Then he thanked Rodney, Mitch, Adam, Cody and other that have been helping him.

Next up for the NNKC is the annual night race on August 27. It’s the Rick Jerome Memorial named after one of the club’s founders. That’s when many put extra lights on their karts.
