RACING PREVIEW: FEBRUARY 23 TO 26

RENO, NV (Feb.22) — This weekend we take a short pause from local racing. So it’s a is a good time to preview the upcoming oval track season and events over the hill.

There is also an announcement about a venue change for the upcoming Loretta Lynn Regional Qualifying races.

CAR MEETS:

• Only one car meet on tap this weekend and that’s when Sparks has its next one on Sunday. Start time is 10 a.m. and the location is the Starbucks on Disc Drive.

• While not exactly car meets two tracks are having functions this weekend.

This Saturday Rattlesnake Raceway is having it first swap meet in the pit area.
  • Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon will have is first Swap Meet Saturday from 8 until 4 p.m. Location is in the pits.
Saturday is when Lovelock Speedway is having a track clean up day.

– After being dark for two years Lovelock Speedway is being brought back to life. To help the facility there is a track clean up day Saturday, I’m guessing the start time will be around 10 a.m. and hopefully they’ll get enough help.

This Saturday and Sunday E Street MX Park hosts the Yuba River Run Hare & Hound race.

• E Street MX Park is also busy this weekend. The track is hosting the Yuba River Run Hare Scrambles. It’s an AMA District 36 event with prizes.

• Closer to home the motocross track at Fernley 95A Motor Sports Complex might have practice sessions. Right now it’s up to the weather so the best bet is to check their Face Book page Thursday or Friday.

RACING PREVIEW (OVAL TRACKS):

March is when oval tracks in our region start to gear up for the coming season. Hopefully by then Ma Nature might be finished with winter and spring will be gracing our area.

As usual most tracks run two-day events that are usually Friday-Saturday events but some time they have a Saturday-Sunday event. Once exception is on the 4th of July weekend.

Diamond Mountain Speedway gets things rolling by having the eareliest test and tune sessions.
  • First to get going is Diamond Mountain Speedway up in Susanville, California. They start with two weekends of Test and Tune Sessions on March 18/19 as well as 25/26 and their first two-day event is on April 7 and 8.

  • Winnemucca Regional Raceway now has a new promoter and board. The track’s season begins on April 28 and 29.
  • Moving south the Tonopah Speedway starts its season on May 27 with the annual Jim Butler Days event.
Rattlesnake Raceway gets rolling toward the end of April.

  • Still no word on the oval at Fernley 95A Motor Sports Complex. Hope they can have a few races this year then get back to normal operation in 2024.
  • American Valley Speedway in east Quincy had not posted its schedule for 2023 when this report was posted.
VORRA starts its desert racing series in March. They will use Lovelock Speedway as the pits as well as the start and finish area.

• For you off-road fans VORRA is starting its desert series on the weekend of March 3-5. They’ll use the Lovelock Speedway as their pits and the first racer will be launched at 9 a.m. Saturday. Nice thing is that it’s paved all the way from town to the pits.

RACING (NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL):

• On Thursday Fox Sports 1, at 3 p.m., airs NASCAR Race Hub to get things going for the weekend.

• Friday is pretty well empty except for practice sessions but other places to see highlights and races are www.floracing.com, or www.mavtv.com, and finally www.youtube.com.

• On Saturday CBS Sport Network, at 5:30 a.m. has the Formula E race from Cape Town, South Africa.

The AMA Supercross series moves east to Arlington, Texas for round 7 of the series. Track map courtesy – swapmotolive.com.

• Sunday starts at 9 a.m. when CNBC has the World Super Bike race from Phillip Island, Australia.

  • Then at 12:30 p.m. FOX airs the NASCAR Cup race from Fontana. This is the final race before they reconfigure it from a super speedway to a ½ mile track. Then it might be the west coast Martinsville.

That’s it for this weekend so if possible get out to either a race, if you’re in California or a car meet. With the weather Sunday might be the best day but please be careful out there. See you next week.

OTHER RACING NEWS:

Here is the 2023 NNKC schedule with the track configurations added.

The Northern Nevada Kart Club added the track configurations it’s using this season to the schedule. Should be a good year for the club.

This year three of the Supermoto races are held at Desert Park Raceway, home of the Northern Nevada Kart Club.

– NNKC’s home track, Desert Park is also hosting the last three rounds of this year’s Supermoto Series. These are two-day events where the first is on asphalt while the Sunday is a combination of asphalt and dirt. Should be interesting.
