DIAMOND MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY OPENS SEASON

RENO, NV (4-10-23) — On Easter weekend Diamond Mountain Speedway opened its 2023 season. It was a Friday-Saturday event for the track.

Before the main events began youngsters from the stands and pits were invited to the infield for the traditional Easter Egg Hung.

As traditional once Saturday’s heat races ended it was time for the annual Easter Egg Hunt. Youngsters were divided by size and after a countdown the rush was on. Some of the very young were a bit confused as what they were supposed to while older ones were on the hunt.

Once that was taken care of there were two dashes where the winners would win $100.

Jeffrey Hudson won the IMCA Dash.

In the IMCA dash Jeffrey Hudson got the lead and hung on to win although he was chased by Chris Nieman.

Grayson Olschowka, who is 9-years-old, won the Street Stock Dash.

The Street Stock heat was a runaway. First on point was 9-year-old Grayson Olschowka (Yes he is 9), who scored the win and money while Jeff Willis was the runner up.

First up were the IMCA Sport Mods and on the green Shayna Nieman was point with Jace Wright and Colton Chew giving chase. Soon the lead trio pulled away from the pack and started to close in on the slowest cars.

Tyler Rodgers won the Sport Mod main.

There was a caution but when the green waved again Tyler Rodgers was on point with Chew close behind. At the checkered Rodgers scored the victory followed by Chew and third place Chad Wormington.

First on point when the Mini Stock main began was Marilyn Yawnick and she was chased by Ryan Sevensson. Three cautions will slow the pace of the race.

In the Mini Stock main Anthony Hovland (18X) took the lead and scored his first victory in the class.

After the final caution ended Anthony Hovland was on point with Quintyn Ericks giving chase. At the end Hovland scored his first Mini Stock win followed by Joseph Cook and third place Cooper Lee.

When the Street Stock main began Greg McCully was on point with Jeff Willis and Joe Conroy giving chase. Soon Willis took the lead then Carl Barlow used an outside pass to take the point.

Rocky Goetz won the Street Stock main but he was chased the whole race.

The was one caution that bunched everyone and on the restart it became a three-way duel for the lead. In the final laps Rocky Goetz got through lap traffic the best and scored the victory.

When the IMCA Modified main began Chris Nieman led followed by Kate Robertson. In the early laps there were two quick cautions but each time Nieman held the lead.

In the late laps there were three more cautions, on of which came when three cars tangled in Turn 4.

Chris Nieman won the IMCA A Mod race. Here he’s chased by Shawn Natenstedt.

On the final restart Nieman took off followed by Shawn Natenstedt. At the checkered flag it was Nieman with Jeffrey Hudson taking the runner up spot while Natenstedt slipped to third.

Finally it was time for the IMCA Stock Car main. On the green Jeff Olschowka led with Nick Boucher and Craig Nieman chasing him.

There would be two quick cautions that bunched the cars. After the race passed the halfway mark three cars tangled in Turn 4.

This three car crash in Turn 4 brought the IMCA Stock Car main to a stop. Thankfully none of the three drivers involved suffered anything but minor injuries.

That incident sent one of the cars into the air and one of them ended up on its side with the driver’s window on the ground. The race was stopped as two of the drivers and the track crew rushed to the scene.

Today’s safety improvements did their job and all three drivers were spared any major injuries although they might be bruised and a bit sore for the next few days. Neither of them were happy about the incident.

Craig Nieman (7Z) on his way to winning the IMCA Stock Car main.

After the clean up the race, now shortened was run for five laps. In the end Nieman scored the win followed by Rusty McMillian and Nick Boucher.

Next up for the track is racing on the weekend of April 22nd.
