OLD TIMER NATIONALS AT FERNLEY 95A MX

FERNLEY, NV (April16) — The two-day Old Timer Nationals visited the Fernley 95A Motorsports Complex this weekend. Two days of motocross action with the final two motos on Sunday after the three on Saturday.

Other than the wind the weather was almost perfect for racing on Sunday. There were six motos for the various classes plus two support races that also combined classes.

Duane Marker won the 60+ Master Class.

First gate drop sent two 60 plus classes onto the track. Duane Marker in the Master class left everyone in his wake as the stormed off to claim his second win of the say. Behind him Ron Thornton won the Expert class.

Next up were the 60 plus Intermediate class and 15 riders took off when the gate dropped. First on point was Mark Hall and he scored the moto victory.

The final 60+ Intermediate moto was won by Mark Hall. On points he wound up third for the weekend.

After winning the moto Mark Hall said, “This is the first moto I won this weekend. The track is nice and rough just like the stuff I grew up with. I need to thank my employer Western Power Sports, Fly Racing, X Brand Goggles and BP Racing Fuels.”

Behind him Doug Horner scored enough points to claim the weekend’s overall victory. Local Joel Ellis used a pair of runner-up finishes to end up second for the weekend.

Next up were the 60 plus Novice racers as well as the 70 plus Intermediate and Expert group and the 75 Plus class. Yes they still are racing at that age.

Rodney Rohrbacher won the 60+ Novice Class.

After winning his second moto Rodney Rohrbacher said, “The race was good but they moved me up this weekend, no more beginner. The track was awesome, the track is a lot better than it used to be.

“I want to thank Nevada Old Timers, they’ve done a really good job getting the track together.”

At the checkered Rodney Rohrbacher use two wins to take the weekend’s overall victory. The other class winners were Gary Kritcher, 70+ Intermediate, Steve Moore, 70+ Expert and topping the age ladder was Kerry Barnes, who won the 75+ victory.

Next on top were the 40+ Expert, 40+ Master and the 50+ Master classes. After the gate dropped Ryan Hansen the only 40+ Master rider took off and was chased the entire race by Mike Bell.

Ryan Hansen left everyone his dust as he won his race. He was the only 40+ Master.

Later Hansen said, “Was good but the track dried out a little bit quicker. They’re doing the best they can and we have a track so I’m grateful for that.”

Then he thanked Michaels Power Sports, O’Neil Racing, 100 Percent.

Matt Manha was the 40+ Expert winner while in the 50+ Master class Mike Bell was the winner of that class.

Race 5 also was comprised of three classes, 40+ Intermediate, 50+ Intermediate and 50+ Expert. As such they were launched in two groups.

Mike Brown, in the 50+ Expert class, was first on point with David Lewis giving chase. In the second group Joey York led the 40+ Intermediate as they chased the first group.

Mike Brown topped the 50+ Expert Class.

At the checkered Brown won his class while Jamie Bonner won the 50+ Intermediate and York scored the 40+ Intermediate victory.

After winning Brown said, “That was a lot of fun, got it figured out yesterday. This is my first moto win, I went like 2-2-2.”

Then he thanked his family and business.

Finally Race 6 ended the Old Timer part of the show when two novice classes were launched. At the checkered,  Blair Richardson reached the finish first winning the 40+ group while Ray Romero, who was close behind scored the 50+ win.

Blair Richardson won the 40+ Novice Class and was first in Sunday’s final Old Timer moto.

After pulling off the course Blair Richardson said, “It was pretty good but getting a bit windy so got to worry about that. The track’s not too bad, you know the sun’s out the wind’s blowing, beautiful weather.”

Next on the schedule were two multi class support races. First up was the 30+ Vets Beginner, 125cc+ Beginner, Women Beginner and Women’s Intermediate.

In the support 125cc Beginner class Christopher Whalen scored the victory.

When the gate fell Christopher Whalen was on point with Charles Grubb right behind him.  The finished in that order but Grubb had the points advantage so he got the day’s victory.

Summer McMillen was the only Women’s Beginner. As usual she was sporting her trademark red tutu.

Behind them Cody Key won the30+ Vets Beginner class while Summer McMillen was the only Women Beginner, and she was wearing her trademark, red tutu while Anna McMillen topped the Women’s Intermediate class.

Next up was the final race of the weekend. This time four classes would race; the 30+ Intermediate and Advanced as well as the 125 Intermediate and Advanced. By now the winds had picked up a bit.

In the final race Rogen Hill won the 125cc Advanced Class.

Rogen Hill would make it a perfect day as he won both motos in 125cc Advanced and Luke Kunkel matched that with two wins in 125cc Intermediate. Moving to the 30+ classes, Tim Stone was the winner in the Advanced division while Samuel Hitchborn was the Intermediate winner.

• Saturday had a full program but this time the Old Timer racers did three motos and there were support races as well.

The Old Timers return to Fernley 95A again on the weekend May 20-21. Saturday is for practice while Sunday is race day and there will be a full slate of classes.

REPORTER’S NOTE: The wind cause a bit of distortion when I was recording quotes so probably didn’t get all of them. There is a photo gallery at the end of the results at the bottom of this article.
