RACING PREVIEW: MAY 18 TO 21

RENO, NV (MAY 17) — Going to be a very warm weekend, one full of car meets, a cruise to Lake Tahoe as well as two oval tracks in action and a motocross. Not to be outdone, there are several events on TV as well as a major cancellation.

CAR MEETS:

This week is the HAN Spring Fever Revival at the Grand Sierra.

• The biggest meet in this area is Hot August Nights Spring Fever Revival. Cars will be on display in the north parking lot, but a few will be in the Casino, and there is a sock hop every night.

• On Friday and Saturday, from 7:30 until 11, there will be a meet starting at the 76th station in Fernley. It’s hosted by Fernley Car Meets and will either be a meet or a cruise.

If there is space be sure to call first and you can help with a car show at the Northern Nevada Veteran’s Guest Home.

• If one has a nice looking car and want to help out those at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home here is an opportunity. This notice is a little late so one needs to call ahead just to be sure they still need cars as the show is on Friday.

This Saturday is the Nevada Jeep Club’s 2nd Annual Go Topless cruise.

• Saturday, starting at 9 a.m., is when the Nevada Jeep Club will have its 2nd Annual Top Less Day. The Jeeps will form up and cruise to Lake Tahoe.

There are several starting points so best bet is to check the Face Book page for the Nevada Jeep Club. Looks like it will be a great day for wind in you hair and the sun on your face.

Fallon Cars & Coffee meets Saturday at the Alley Bat.

• Saturday morning, from 9 until noon, Fallon Cars N’ Coffee has a meet at the Alley Bar.  There will be music, swag as well as free coffee, hot coco and donuts.

Part of Fallon’s Armed Forces Day celebration is a Poker Chip Run.

• There are going to be Armed Forces Day celebrations this Saturday in Fallon as well as the Poker Chip Run and Motorcycle Games. Location is at the Churchill County Fairground. Registration is a 9 a.m. with kickstands up at 10 a.m.

Reno Cars & Coffee has its second meet of the month starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.

• On Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. Reno Cars & Coffee will have a meet at the Human Bean Coffee Stand located by the corner of Keitzke and Moana Lanes.

RACING (4-WHEEL):

For three days the Northern Nevada Kart Club will host test and tune sessions at Desert Park Raceway.

• The Northern Nevada Kart Club is hosting three days of testing and tuning at Desert Park Raceway starting on Friday and going through Sunday. A great way to get tuned up for the club’s next race and for further information please check www.nnkcreno.com.

Battle Mountain Raceway starts its season this weekend with a Friday-Saturday show.

• The Friday and Saturday evening Battle Mountain Raceway starts its season with a Friday-Saturday Show. Racing usually begins at 7 p.m. each night.

Diamond Mountain Speedway has a Friday-Saturday show this weekend.

• Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville, California has two days of racing. The action begins at 7 p.m. Friday and at 6 p.m. Saturday. Both days are “Kids Win a Bike Night.”

Rounding out the show are the Modern Concrete Winged Sprint Car series.

-That same night the Modern Concrete Winged Sprint Tour will start its season. They will race both Friday and Saturday as will the track’s usual divisions.

Finally the season is starting at Top Gun Dragstrip.

• Top Gun Dragstrip, located on Highway 95 south of Fallon, begins its season with $5 Fridays. It costs $5 for spectators and $20 if a person wants to race; a great time to race one’s friends.

Going to be an action packed weekend at Top Gun Dragstrip.

Things start at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday with ET and Junior Dragtsters plus NorCal Nostalgia racing. Should be great weather.

RACING AND PRACTICE (MOTORCYCLES):

Fast Friday’s Speedway racing is rolling over in Auburn.

• Friday there is speedway racing over in Auburn. Fast Fridays are going right now and it should be a great show.

Two MRANN champions are holding a riding clinic this weekend for Minis Women.

• This weekend former MRANN champions Corey Fletcher and Russell Tonjum has hosting a riding clinic. Saturday is for the Mini Riders, 50cc to 85cc, while Sunday is for the Women Racers.

Location is private so best advice it to contact either of them then they’ll give directions to the location.

Next round of the BBMX series will be at Fernley 95A this weekend.

• Closer to home the next round of the BBMX series will be at Fernley 95A. Saturday is for practice and a good time to find a spot if one is camping.

There will be a special pro moto at the races out at Fernley on Sunday.

The host club is OTMX and on Sunday they’ll have a 1 moto, 5-lap race for the pros. The more that show up the larger the payout will be. Should be a wild race.

• Over the hill Prairie City is closed while the track is being prepared for the annual Hangtown Outdoor event.

• Riverfront MX has practice from 5 until 10 p.m. Thursday and at that same time for Mini riders on Friday. Track is closed Saturday and Sunday is a private ride day.

• E Street MX Park has redesigned its track and there will be practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

First round of this year’s Summer Sundayz series is Sunday at the Oatfield track.

• This year’s Summer Sundayz Motocross series starts on Sunday. Round 1 will be staged on the Oatfield track.

RACING (NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL)

This weekend’s Formula 1 race has been canceled due to flooding.

• Big news this weekend is the cancellation of the Formula 1 race in Italy. Seems there is flooding in the area and part of the track was involved.

• On Thursday starting at 9 a.m. Peacock will have Indy Car practice from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Then at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NASCAR Race Hub.

• Starting at 9 a.m. Peacock has the fifth Indy Car Fast Friday Practice. Then Fox Sports 1 has NHRA Qualifying show #1 from the Route 66 Nationals.

• Saturday begins at 5:30 a.m. when Peacock airs the 6th Indy Car Practice. Then at 8 a.m. Peacock starts coverage of Indy Car qualifying and at 11:30 a.m. NBC takes over.

  • Over on FOX at 10:30 a.m. the network airs the Craftsman Truck Series race from North Wilksboro. At 1 p.m. www.mavtv.com airs, on a delayed basis, the first MotoAmerica race from Babar Motorsports Park.

• Sunday begins on Peacock at 11 a.m. when they air more Indy Car qualifying. Over on Fox Sports 1 they have the second NHRA qualifying show.

  • Peacock and NBC at 1 p.m. has more Indy Car qualifying including the Fast 6. At that same time Mavtv, airs the second MotoAmerica race from Barber.

• This past couple of years an effort has been made to bring the historic track at North Wilkesboro back to life. This weekend NASCAR’s All Star race is held there on Sunday and shown on Fox Sports 1.

Here is the full schedule for this week when NASCAR is at North Wilksboro Speedway. Most of the schedule is on Fox Sports 1.

I’m attaching the full schedule here but more of the events can be found on Fox Sports 1.

  • The day ends with the NHRA Route 66 Nationals in the Chicago area. Hopefully the weather will hold for them.

That’s it for this weekend. If possible do attend a race as there is nothing like seeing it live. There are also plenty of car events in our area to enjoy as well.

The Sparks A&W is continuing its Wednesday evening cruise ins. Things begin at 5 p.m. across from Reed High School.

Remember the Sparks A&W, across from Reed High School, has a cruise in on Wednesday. Starts at 5 p.m. and there are prizes and music as well as car to see.

Daveys Amercian Racing is usually on at 6 p.m. Wednesday evenings. One can see the show on Face Book and get into the chat was well.

Daveys American Racing is on Face Book. Things start at 6 p.m.

Davey covers national series as well as racing in the western United States. His focus is on oval tracks.
