NORTHERN NEVADA KART CLUB: ROUND 4

STEAD, NV (JULY 9) — A warm summer weekend greeted the Northern Nevada Kart Club. It was time for round 4 of the season at Desert Park Raceway.

Since the hill wasn’t used, and it was a short course so there were more laps in the heats and main. There were 90 registered drivers racing this day.

First go was the Kid Kart Class. These are the youngest racers and their main was only 10 laps.

One of the closest Kid Kart races when runner up Presley Prater almost caught winner Paisley Purdy.

It seemed to be a runaway for Paisley Purdy. However behind him Presley Prater had been closing the gap.

They were very close and at the finish the Purdy reached the checkered flag under three tenths of a second before Prater.

Next up was the Shifter 80 Class which is enjoying a rebirth with the NNKC. For virtually all the race Sky Corson had Turbo Sombatsiri on her back bumper.

Winner Sky Corson and runner up Turbo Sombatsiri were this close for most of the F80 Shifter main.

Lap after lap they were so close a large blanket could have covered both their karts. Carson won by a scant 0.344 seconds over Sombatsiri.

Asked if she knew how close he was Corson said, “I heard him, he had me tired out for a minute and he was there, she said. “In that type of position you’ve just got to get into that head space like ‘I have to do it, have to keep going.’

“It’s really hard but when you hear him creeping up on you kind of have to get into a blank zone with it and keep yourself going no matter how physically or mentally challenging it is or how bad you want to pull off.”

Then she thanked her Dad, Mitch, Cody, Jerry and every body else that has helped her.

The big shifter class uses both the Honda 125 and the ROK motor. So they have a combined main.

When the field was launched Mike Frazer jumped into the lead followed by Zeke Corson and Mitch Kennedy. This lead trio began to pull away and it became a three-way duel for the lead.

Eventually Faker and Corson turned it into a two-driver duel for the lead while Kennedy was running solo in third. Behind them fifth place Brooks Anderline was the first of the two Honda drivers.

Mike Faker was first overall in the Shifter 125/ROK main.

In the end Faker reached the finish only 0.665 seconds ahead of runner up Corson and Kennedy was further back.

After the post race weigh in Faker explained how he did it. “If I didn’t make any mistakes since if I did I’m sure he’d by right by. The end of the straight is a good place to pass so I kind of swished over a little bit to the left to make sure I didn’t give him any openings. Yea I knew he’d be there. “

Then he thanked his wife for letting him do this as well as Rodney and Zack at Nevada Kart Sport.

When the Junior 1 main began 11 drivers headed toward Turn1. Up front Kayden Williams began to pull away from the field.

Kayden Williams scored another run away victory in Junior 1.

He kept extending so the race was for second. Apparently the transponder in Kipton Bocchi’s kart wasn’t working so he wasn’t shown in the printed results.

Up front it was all Williams as he scored anoither run away victory. Looks like he’ll be old enough to move up to Junior 2 next year.

Behind Williams, Bocci was second followed by Noah Manubi, who was close behind in third while Jameson Morrisey ended up fourth.

Williams later said, “The secret is to drive smooth and be careful aroun lappers.”

Then he thanked his family and sponsors.

REPORTER’S NOTE: Unfortunately the wind conspired to essentially drown out most of what Williams said. Did get a little and need to apologize to him for that. Next time I intend to have a real digital recorder for gathering the quotes.

Next up was a race that combined three classes, KA100, KA100 Masters and KT100. On the green Giovanni Median took off and William Owen was second as they left the pack in their wake.

The KA100/TAG race combines three classes. Giovanni Media scored the overall and KA100 victory.

For Medina it was a green-to-checkered race as he scored the win and was first in KT100. Owen was runner up in that class and overall

Mike McMullen, who finished 4th overall won the KA100 Masters class after holding off Dan Hayward and Nat Sombatsiri.

In the Master’s Class Mike McMullen, who was 4th over all had to hold off Dan Hayward and Steve Ryckebosch, whose race ended with a broken chain. Darryl VanDom fifth place finish put him on top of the KT100 class.

Darryl VanDom won the KT100 Class.

Asked about the race Medina said, “I’ve been practicing my starts, my dad’s been forcing me make my starts at little bit early. If I can get a little jump on them then I don’t have to worry about them. Lap traffic was kind of crazy and I thought they were going to catch up to me.”

Then he thanked his parents and friends for their support.

Thanked – His mother and friends.

The Heavy Class is probably the biggest NNKC has. When the green waved 18 drivers headed down the front straight.

Up front Andrew Kemp was on point with Eric Kuzemchak, Brandon Arace and Jake Bruchette giving chase. It soon morphed into a five-kart train when Kelsey Nelson moved up.

The number varied as the laps wore down.

Heavy winner Andrew Kemp had to hold off Eric Kuzemchak in an almost race long duel.

Going by the white flag it was a four-way duel for the lead and the top three, Kemp. Kuzemchak and Arace were nose-to-tail in the rush to the checkered; they finished in that order.

Asked if he knew how close the other were Kemp said, “They were back there, I felt them. Secret was to make that kart as wide as possible. It was a short-track, a quick track and I drove it.”

Then he thanked his sponsors, Gentleman’s Barbershop, All Around Fabrication, Foreign Autohaus, Limitless Auto Sales, TGP, Cross Fit, Mister Forward Direction Motorsports, Kemp Motorsports.

Junior 2 was all Cooper Perez. He led from green to finish and extended ever lap.

This was about as close to Junior 2 winner Cooper Perez as Carter Knight and Lucca Sweetland ever were.

At the checkered Perez was followed, at a distance was runner up Carter Knight, Isaiah Manubi and Bryce Benton.

“It was fun,” Perez said. “The track is faster and faster every year, in that last main event I beat the track record so we know its getting down and back to where it was four years ago.

Then he thanked his parents,Jeff Nelson for motor and Cole Nelson Race Team for my kart.

The Pro 4 Cycle class is very competitive and on this day when the main started Ed Atkins was on point while pole sitter Alec Beaudion, Jim Johns and Rachel Williams close behind him.

After a few laps Atkins’ kart threw it chain. Then Beaudion took the lead After a few laps Williams took over second and the chase was on.

Eventually Williams took the lead. Now she had Beaudion on her back bumper. It was a several lap nose-to-tail duel.

Late in the Pro4 Cycle main winner Alec Beaudion was chased by runner up Rachel Williams.

Late in the race Beaudion finally got around her and they finished in that order. Johns ended up a close third while Lucas Lemaire ended up fourth.

Later, after catching his breath, Beaudoin said, “First of all have to give a huge shout out to Ed, Rachel, Jimmy Johns. This class is so much fun, this engine, this package we have some incredibleed races and that was one of them. Unfortunately Ed (Atkins) blew his chain while leading, so we end up being a three-kart fight.

“After that. Rachel went a little wide so I jumped inside going into 7. Oh my 16 laps was a lot of fun. First and foremost I need to thank my dad because wouldn’t be doing this without his support. His engine I got to borrow , my other one blew up.”

The racing weekend ended with the Senior Class main. There were 14 drivers that took the green.

Up front Nathan Heath was leading with Gio Medina right behind him. Andrew Hitchock was third with Brooks Anderline fourth.

This all shifted when second through fourth formed a three-kart duel for second. This allowed Heath to extend his lead.

As the race progressed first and seond were close while third and fourth were close. In the last part of the race Anderline moved into third then took over second.

The day ended with the Senior Class main. Nathan Heath won that main.

Heath had built up such a lead he scored the win. Anderline was the runner up, Medina was third and in fourth place was Hitchcock.

Before his kart headed to the Table of Doom, where it was inspected Heath said, “I just focus on driving, I don’t try to look behind myself I just look forward and do what I’ve got to do.”

Then he thanked his for father for helping him, Cole Nelson for his kart, his whole family and the others racing.”

Next event for the NNKC  is on Saturday, August 19, the annual night race. Lights are put up and many decorate their karts with lights for the occasion.

The event is in memory of Rick Jerome, one of the club’s founders. It’s always a fun event and run in the cool of the evening.
