WILD NIGHT AT THE FAIR RACES

SUSANVILLE, CALIF. (July23) — The Lassen County Fair was this weekend and the last evening is when Diamond Mountain Speedway stages the Fair Races happen.

Right after hot laps kids faced off in their own demo derby where the one that bumped into another the most times won. The fans were cheering the youngsters.

After a hot lap session it was time for the heats but before the youngsters lined up for a demo derby of their own. They were in those little battery-operated cars for kids.

To the cheers of the fans in the grandstands and those around them they gave a pretty good show until one was declared the winner

After the heat races finished there was another demolition derby, this time with compact cars. It added over an hour to the show.

First on the racing card were the Street Stocks. First on point was Aaron Flournoy, who was being chased by Don Deiter.

Behind the leaders the duo of Royce Goetz and Jesse Gonzalez were moving through the pack. By the fourth lap the leaders started lapping the slower cars.

The first caution came when Michael Beauchman spun in Turn 2. He was able to get restarted and rejoin the race.

During the Street Stock main Don Deiter makes the winning pass as he gets past Aaron Flournoy.

When the green waved Flournoy took off with Goetz and Deiter right behind him. Soon Deiter used an inside more to take the point while Flournoy faded back to fifth place.

At the flag Deiter won with Goetz, Gonzalez and Shayna Nieman taking the next three positions.

When the Mini Stocks main began Malachi Moya was on point with Addison Humphrey giving chase. The first caution came when one of the cars went over the Turn 3 banking but was able to get back on track.

Soon after racing resumes Doug Hast took over second then Nick Boucher used an outside move to take over second.

Soon the race was between Hast and Boucher. Late in the race Hast and Boucher brought out a caution when contact spun Hast. Boucher was put at the back of the pack, and this put Cooper Lee in the lead.

In the last laps Moya would hit the wall then Hast spun on the front stretch. So the race ended with yellow and checkered flags waving.

Up front Lee scored the victory followed by runner up Anthony Hovland and Tony Quinonez.

Asked about the race Cooper Lee said, “It was a little chaotic, I mean the whole race a bunch of guys bouncing off each other. Just hard racing the whole time there toward the end the guy in second kind of took out the guy in first.

“It fell into my lap there. It was good, hard racing and a great track they prepped here.”

Then he thanked dad, grandpa for putting his car back together, Old Iron Powder Coating, Fast Glass and everyone that helps him out.

Early in the Dwarf Car main Joe Frock is chased by Glenn Sciarani

Only five Dwarf Cars were on hand. At the start of their main Joe Frock took off with Glenn Sciarani giving chase.

The only caution came when Franklin Smith spun but he was able to continue. In the end Frock scored another win while William Christiano was second and Franklin Smith ended up third.

Joe Frock sent these quotes as he had to leave before the trophies were presented.

“The track was pretty good. Jeff reworked it after the heat races and it was smooth and fast. The track had some slick spots but was really nice to race on. Makes it fun and definitely favors the disciplined drivers, need to thank my out crew tonight, my son Tanner. He’s not much of a wrench turner, but he does provide some comic relief in the pits.”

He added thanks to his sponsors, who are; R&J Landscaping, Wild Island, Nieman Metal Works, Diatte Racing Innovations, Zoomaluma Graphic, Voss Fab Bodies by DBD, Hooked Up Performance Products and Wheelman Supply house.

When the IMCA Stock Cars began their main Terry Kennemore was on point with Jeff Olschowka right behind him. There would be an early caution due to debris on Turn 4 so a full restart was ordered.

On the third attempt at a start everyone got going and Mike Fiklin was on point. Then another caution happened when two cars stopped in Turn 3 after contact.

The two involved were put in the back due to rough driving. On the restart Mike Ficklin took off only to spin in Turn 3 and somehow everyone missed him.

During the IMCA Stock Car main Wade Kennemore worked his way to the front and scored the victory.

It took a bit to get the order reset and during that time something broke in Terry Kennemore’s car so it had to be towed to the pits.

On the restart Wade Kennemore led the charge followed by Craig Nieman and Jeff Olschowka. Then would finish in that order.

Wade Kennemore holds his trophy for winning the IMCA Stock Car feature. He also had a cheering section on the back of his car.

“It was more eventful at first, Ken Kennemore said after the race. “We had a couple of yellows come out and we kind of stuck in the back so had to cruise around and we were able to find a line there on the bottom and pick cars off one by one.

“The track was definitely tricky, got a little up at the top so you had to be pretty smooth with it. All in all it was pretty good, we got to the front, hit our marks and walked away with it.”

Then he thanked B and M Fabrications, Terri Mankins Dog Grooming, High Sierra Collision and DT Pumps.

It took a pair of green flags to get the Modified main going. Before the field completed one lap one car stopped at the top of the Turn 1&2 banking; it had to be towed to the pits.

Once the race got going Ryan Peery was on point with Kevin Pendergrass and Rob Robles giving chase. Soon Pendergrass would take the top spot just before a caution.

Ryan McDaniel on his way to winning the IMCA Modified main.

Once Bob Kelly got going again the race resumed. Soon Pendergrass was replaced at the top spot by Ryan McDaniel. At the end McDaniel won followed by runner up Chris Nieman and Pendergrass.

Asked about the race McDaniel said, “The race was interesting, you had to go where they weren’t. Sometimes that wasn’t where I wanted to be but I knew that was the only way to win. I wanted to be on the bottom but at the end of the day can’t follow.

“If you want to win you have to go around them. On that restart I just went high and if they were high I just went low. This thing you put it where ever you want to go and it just goes, driving like a Cadillac “

Then he thanked McDaniel Motorsports, Jay’s Mobil Welding, Farm Farm, and Vanderbuilt Chassis.

The Northern Sportmod feature ended the racing program and that when the wheels kind of fell off the kart.

It took three attempts to get the race started. Then this was followed by two cautions within the next two laps

By now Cole Olexiewicz was in the lead and took off at every restart. He would be chased by Colton Chew but every lap or so there was a caution followed by a restart.

The race was shortened and finally the checkered flag with a yellow flag flew after there was a three-car tangle in Turn 1.

Things were so scrambled the main’s results weren’t posted but Olexiewicz won and this reporter believes Chew was the runner up.

“I was hoping it would end, it seemed like we could only do two or three laps without the yellow or the field piled up,” Olexiewicz said. “I was ready for it to be over. There is a nice little grip patch in 1 and 2 all the way down by tires. You can stick if you get the left side of the car, got him on that, beat him on the front stretch.

“Three and four is a lot more tricky there’s no grip down there so you have to ride the brakes with a little bit of gas.”

Then he thanked his parents, Simmons Motor Sports and Auto Zone.

Next race at Diamond Mountain will be Saturday, August 12th. It’s the final points race of the season and has a 6 p.m. start time.
