LOVELOCK, NV — Every year the rural town of Lovelock celebrates its founding with Frontier Days. The speedway also celebrates this with two days of racing.
After Saturday’s heat races ended there was a Fast Dash for the Street Stocks. Leading from the front row Carl Barlow scored the victory.
Then the fun began when 13 compact cars participated in a Demolition Derby. That event and two raffle prizes, one being a kid’s bike, brought one of the largest crowds the track has seen.
An area on the infield was set aside for the demolition drivers and they lined up on both sides with their car’s noses point outward. On the signal to start everyone roared backwards into the fray.
For several minutes the organized chaos reigned as drivers were hitting cars on the front and rear. The aim was to not hit another car in the driver’s door as that would disqualify one.
Finally Matt Yenne’s car was still able to move and he was declared the winner. After getting the checked flag he stood on top of his car and celebrated with the crowd.
As drivers that were racing headed for their cars it was time to give away two raffle prizes. One was a little electric car for a youngster while the other a kid’s bike. Then it was time for the racing to begin.
The Bootleggers started the mains and on the green Austin Miller was on point. At the back Ryan Parkhurst was starting to move forward.
As Miller extended his lead Parkhurst got to third and once he took over second the chase was on. After a couple of laps where the leaders were close Parkhurst made his move when the white flag came out.
Parkhurst won followed by Miller, third place Danner Barrick and John Flowers ended up fourth.
Later Parkhurst said, “That one was not easy. The track in the Bootlegger main was, super fast, sheet of glass, sticky. In the Hobby Stock main got pretty rough and slick.”
Thanked – Shelton Racing and Fabrication, Kryptonite Marine, Murphy’s Concrete, his wife and car owner Shari, car owner and Gerome Clive.
Next on the racing card were the IMCA Stock Cars. On the green Brad Schmidt was on point until Zach Cail took the lead going down the backstretch.
Behind the leader Marie Curis and Craig Nieman were giving chase. Soon Cail’s car began to give off smoke in the turns due apparently to a tire rub
There was a late caution but when racing resumed Cail headed for the pits. This gave the lead to Curtis, who was able to score the victory after holding off Nieman and third placed Rusty McMillan.
Later while waiting for her trophy picture Curtis said, ”Zach Cail was ahead of me for most of the race. It was hard to get around him as there just wasn’t anything on the top. He ended up getting a flat, which got me the lead and I just had to hold it off from there.”
Then she thanked Bianchi’s NAPA Auto Parts, Curtis Machinery, Patriot Storage, Tyler Motorsports, KRM Digital Marketing, G’s Pool Hall, her grandparents and family.
Only four cars started the Dwarf Car main and Glenn Sciarani was briefly in the lead. Soon Joe Frock took the point and went into cruise control as he left everyone in his wake.
There was a long duel for third between two drivers. In the end Fock won with Sciarani second while Nathaniel Gutierrez ended up third ahead of fourth place Franklin Smith.
After the race Frock said, “We were cruising, the track couldn’t have been any better, it was really nice, not many bumps to negotiate, compared to last night it was awesome. “

Eight IMCA Northern Sportmods too the green and Tyler Rodgers was on point. Soon Shaun Merritt was after the leader and the swapped places a couple of times.
The chase lasted most of the race but with two to go Rodgers got into the lead going down the back straight. At the checkered flag it was Rodgers, Merrit and third place Colton Chew.
Next up were the Hobby Stocks and 14 of them took the green flag. Up front Mikki Beuchat and Don Deitr led the charge.
The was a quick caution after Austin Daniels stopped on the front straight. This caused a full restart as the field hadn’t completed a full lap.
On the second restart once again Beuchat and Dieter were up front. Behind them Rocky Goetz was charging toward the front and eventually took over the lead after the next caution.
Thee would be another caution and the race for the lead became a brother act as Rocky was chased by his brother Royce Goetz. Lap after lap they tore around the track.
Then the car of Austin Daniels hit Shayna Nieman’s car and the both stopped by the entrance to Turn 1. The race was red flagged as the medics came to check on Daniels as he appeared shaken up.
Nieman was able to continue but the car of Daniels was towed back the pits. After that the green waved again.
In the final laps Rocky Goetz hung on the score the victory while Beuchat and Deiter ended up second and third while Royce Goetz slipped back to fourth.
For one young driver it was his first race after turning 10-years-old. Grayson Olschowka won his heat but a flat during the main dropped him to ninth at the finish.
After the race Goetz said, “It was a lot tougher than last night, I won both of them, yesterday and today but the track was fairly similar a groove on the bottom for the main event.
“Just miss the line and you’re going to get freight trained by everybody. Knowing you had to hit your mark every time going into the corner and if you hit it you’re going to come out just fine.”
When the green waved to start the IMCA Modified main 10 cars charged intoTurn1. Up front Steven Anderson was on point with Vincent Evenson giving chase.
There was a quick caution then racing resumed. Once again Anderson and Evenson led the charge but soon Ryan McDaniel moved to second and the chase was on.
Soon the top two were nose-to-tail and with a few laps to go there was another caution. When racing resumed Anderson took off with McDaniel following.
At the checkered flag Anderson won followed by McDaniel. Ending up third was Cory Sample while Evenson slipped to fourth at the end.
The evening ended with the Gen-X main and five took the green flag. Up front Kent Knisley, in his car that has lights underneath it, took off and led from green to checkered.
Following winner Knisley were Jorden Riley in second, Ray Blankenship in third, fourth place Cody Thunder and Cooper Lee in fifth.
Several drivers earned a special trophy for good finishes both days. It was a special belt buckle and three of the winners were Kent Knisley in Gen-X, Rocky Goetz in Hobby Stocks and Joe Frock in Dwarf Car. Congratulations to all of them including those I missed.
The next race at Lovelock Speedway will be on Saturday, September 9. That event ends the track’s season.

• In just a couple of weeks the annual Outlaw Flat Trac motorcycle races will be run at the Fair Grounds located at the south end of Carson City.
Friday has a police vs firefighter charity race. Saturday is a blizzard of qualifying, heat races and mains for amateurs first then the pros. One fan favorite is the Running of the Bulls where they race vintage Bultaco bikes.
