RACING PREVIEW: AUGUST 17 TO 20

RENO, NV (Aug. 16) — Another summer weekend with car meets as well as regional racing. In addition there is motocross over the hill and on TV.

CAR MEETS:

• Early Thursday morning, starting around 7 a.m., the Iron Mafia has another meet at Kim’s Donuts & Tea House. Location is 1328 U.S.395 in Gardnerville.

• Friday, from 8 until 11 p.m., the Evo Club is having a meet at the Keitzke Starbucks. Nice way to end the work-week with fellow car people.

• Saturday is a busy day with meets and a special show.

Cops and Classics is at Baldini’s Saturday morning.
  • Things get going at Baldini’s Casino where the Cops and Classics Car Show is in the parking lot. Hours are 9 until 3 p.m. and there is music, a raffle and awards. Proceeds benefit the Washoe County Sheriff’s Honor Guard.
The Cars & Stripes Classic Car Celebration returns to the Sportsman Warehouse Saturday.
  • Over at the Sportsman Warehouse, from 10 until 2:30 p.m. it’s the Cars & Stripes Classic Car Celebration. This is also an Honor Flight Nevada event. Trophies will be awarded at 2 p.m. and the raffle is at 2:30 p.m.
Pizza Baron hosts its final Sat Night Cruise-IN this weekend.
  • The Pizza Baron, located at 1155 West Fourth Street in Reno is having its final Sat Night Cruise Nights of the year. Goes from 6 until 9 p.m. and there are raffle prizes as well as food and drink specials.
Saturday night there is a tractor pull at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
  • The Douglas County Fairground has a tractor pull Saturday evening. Gates open at 4 p.m. and it’s a 6 p.m. start to the action. Be sure to bring hearing protection that these machines are loud.

• Sunday also has a few events so there are choices.

Reno Cars & Coffee has its second meet of the month on Sunday.
  • Reno Cars and Coffee has its second meet of the month. Location is the Human Bean Coffee Stand located by the corner of Keitzke and Moana Lanes. Starts around 10 a.m. and there is usually a pretty good car count.
  • To the east Fallon Cars ‘N’ Coffee has a meet from 8:30 until noon on Sunday. They switched days this time. Location is the Alley Bar located at 1555 South Taylor Street.
Need your car washed. Well the Pin Up Car Wash is Sunday in Carson City.
  • Need your car washed after the rain storms? Well if you are in the Carson City area Sunday that’s when the Pinup Car Wash happens. Starts at 3 p.m., location is at 405 Sear Street and all years, makes and models are welcome.

RACING (4-WHEEL):

• There are several races in our region to pick from this weekend.

  • Down south Tonopah Speedway has racing both Friday and Saturday night. I believe the starting time is 6 p.m.
Rattlesnake Raceway is in action Friday and Saturday evenings.
  • Rattlesnake Raceway is in action both Friday and Saturday nights. The go karts get started around 5 p.m.
  • On Friday night the big cars begin to race at 7 p.m. and there is a t-shirt toss. Saturday the big cars begin at 6 p.m. and there will be a kid’s bike giveaway.
  • American Valley Speedway over in East Quincy, California will be racing Saturday night. The action begins at 6 p.m. and there is a raffle for a quad.
Saturday is the annual night race for the Northern Nevada Kart Club.
  • Up at Desert Park Raceway at Stead the Northern Nevada Kart Club is hosting its only night race of the year. It’s the Rick Jerome Memorial race that honors one of the club’s founders.
  • Many decorate their karts with lights and glow sticks. Practice is from 2 until 6 then its heats and mains as they race into the night. Pre-registration on line is open.

PRACTICE AND RACING (MOTOCYCLES):

This Friday the Best in the Desert stages the annual Casey Folks Vegas to Reno off-road race.

• Biggest motorcycle event is the annual Casey Folks Vegas to Reno Race. Things get rolling Friday at 5:45 a.m. when the bikes are launched then at 9:45 the trucks and cars go and finally at 11:30 the UTV’s are launched.

  • In the north there is a pit stop at Top Gun Drag Strip south of Fallon. Then the course heads for another pit area at Weeks and the race ends at the Rodeo Grounds in Dayton.
The motocross track at Fernley 95A is open for practice both Saturday and Sunday.

• Closer to home the motocross track at Fernley 95A Motorsports Complex has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The first round is Sunday at the Oatfield track.

• The first round of the 2023 Pro MX Fall series gets rolling Sunday over at the Oatfield track.

MMX Racing is hosting an AMA District 36 event this weekend.

• At MMX Racing there is an AMA District 36 Grand Prix this Sunday. Pre registration is now open.

• E Street MX Park has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

• Both Riverfront and Prairie City had a caution note regarding possible heat this weekend. Unfortunately the hot line hadn’t been updated when this article was posted. Best idea is to check their FB pages or call the hot line at 775-265-7223.

RACING (NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL):

• On Thursday at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NASCAR Race Hub. Then at 6 p.m. ESPN carries the SRX (Superstar Racing Experience) from Missouri.

• Friday starts at 3 p.m. when Fox Sports 1 shows the ARCA Racing event from the classic track at Watkins Glen, New York. Then at 5 p.m. the network airs NHRA Qualifying show from Brainerd.

•Saturday starts on Peacock as the network at 7 a.m. has Raceday live and at 10 a.m. airs the Pro Motocross round from Budds Creek.

  • Over on the USA Network at 12:30 there is the Xfinity race from Watkins Glen. At noon www.mavtv.com has the first MotoAmerica Super Bike race from Pittsburgh.

• Sunday is a busy day starting when CBS Sports has the FIM Motocross event from the Netherlands. It’s same day delayed but at 7 a.m. the MX2 race is shown then at 8 a.m. the MXGP event will be aired.

  • At 9 a.m. mavtv airs race 3 and 4 from the MotoAmerica Superbike event from Pittsburgh. Then at 10 a.m. Fox Sports 1 has the NHRA Qualifying show number 2 from Brainerd.

         -At 10:30 a.m., on a delayed basis, CNBC has the MotoGP race from Spielberg. Then at 11 a.m. Fox Sports 1 has the ARCA Racing event from Springfield as the series returns to a dirt track.

• The USA network at noon has the NASCAR Cup race from Watkins Glen. Once again drivers are faced with the challenge a road course offers.

• FOX, at 1 p.m. has the final rounds of the NHRA Brainerd Nationals from Minnesota. This is the last event before the US Nationals at Indianapolis that will determine who is in the count down to the championshps.

Whew! That’s it for this weekend. If possible be sure to get out to a race. There is nothing like it for color and excitement.

One more week before the annual Outlaw Flat Trac motorcycle races are at Fuji Park.

One more week to go before the Outlaw Flat Trac motorcycle races are run. The location is at Fuji Park at the south end of Carson City. Both Friday and Saturday nights are a blizzard of heats and main events. Saying it’s exciting would be an understatement.

Daveys American Racing is usually on Face Book at 6 p.m. Wednesday evenings. One can see the show on Face Book and get into the chat was well.

Daveys American Racing is on a temporary hold right now.

Davey covers national series as well as racing in the western United States. His focus is on oval tracks.

NOTE: Hopefully Davey if feeling better aned will be back on next week.
