RACING PREVIEW: DECEMBER 28 TO 31

RENO, NV (Dec. 27) — As we bid good-by to 2023 things are starting to happen in the world of Motorsports. Over the next three weeks two oval track events will see the green flag, a classic off-road event starts and the starting gate drops kicking off the start of Supercross.

Until then we’re kind in the dead or Re-Run Zone.

CAR MEETS:

The Iron Mafia gets Thursday started early at Kim’s Donuts in Gardnerville.

• Weekend gets going at 7:30 a.m. Thursday when the Iron Mafia has it’s usually meet. Location is Kim’s Donuts at 1328 U.S. 395 North in Gardnerville. Good way to get the day going.

The Fernley Friday Night Meet starts at 4:30 p.m. and meets by the 76th station. Photo courtesy – Cody Hawkins.

 • A great way to wind down from the shortened work week is the Friday Night Meet in Fernley. The meet starts at 4:30 p.m. and the location is the 76th Station.

Starting at 8:30 p.m. Sunday the Nevada Jeep Club will have a gathering at the White House in Carson City.

• On Sunday, starting at 8:30 p.m. there is a gathering of the Nevada Jeep Club. Location is the White House at 402 E. Telegraph St. in Carson City. Might be a good way to welcome in the New Year.

Daddy’s Tacos is where Trucks and Tacos will meet starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

• On Tuesday, January 2nd, Trucks and Tacos has a meet at Daddy’s Tacos. Time is 6:30 p.m. and location is 4840 Mill Street in Sparks. Nice way to welcome the New Year.

RACING (4-Wheel):

Starting on January 1st Cocopah Speedway will host the IMCA Winter Nationals.

• To the south in Arizona Cocopah Speedway is hosting the IMCA.TV Winter Nationals. Starts Tuesday and runs for two weeks. The races can be seen on www.imca.tv.

Reno racer Katelynn Robertson will celebrate the New Year racing at the IMCA Winter Nationals in Arizona.

Racers from across the west will spend New Year’s down there. One of them is Reno resident Katelynn Robertson and of course we extend our best wishes to all the Nevada racers.

• For oval track racing we’re currently in the “Dead Zone,” but I’ll soon start posting 2024 schedules for tracks in this region. Things will start happening not too long after the New Year.

RACING & PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):

• When this article was posted there was very little about practice sessions this weekend. So I would advise checking with a track’s Face Book page before heading out as things could change.

  • Nothing as posted regarding the Fernley Sandbox so I’m guessing they’re closed this weekend.
  • I’m guessing here, but usually Riverfront has practice on Thursday from 5 until 10 p.m. but that will depend on how much rain they have. Then from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
  • Prairie City is the same so I’m guessing they have practice sessions from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Depending on the weather MMX Racing has practice all the way through January 1st.
  • If all goes well MMX racing has practice from 9 until 2 p.m through the weekend. Again it depends on the weather.
E Street MX Park will have practice sessions, depending on the weather right into January 1st. Photo courtesy E Street MX Park.
  • E Street has an ambitious practice schedule although due to the rain they had to cancel Wednesday’s practice. After that they plan on sessions, running from 9 until 2 p.m., on 12-29, 12-30, 12-31 and January 1st. Again, please check before leaving as another storm is on the way.

RACING NATIONAL:

• Once we get past New Year’s there are a couple of major races happening.

One of the classic and intense off-road races is the annual Dakar Rally.
  • On January 5 the annual Dakar Rally starts, its two weeks of intense off-road racing with trucks, side-by-sides, buggies and motorcycles. One hazard in the sand dunes is the competitors need to be aware of herds of camels.
AMA Supercross starts next week on the 6th of January. Here is their schedule.
  • That same weekend the Monster Energy Supercross Championship begins with Anaheim 1 in Southern California. The best motocross racers on the planet race for the championship.
Chili Bowl Nationals starts a week after New Year’s.
  • Then on the 8th of January it’s the annual Chili Bowl Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Over 700 drivers are entered and the races tend to be on the wild side as they use a short, indoor track.

That’s it for this preview article. Depending on what happens the final article of 2023 will be a look ahead to the 2024 season for our region.

Want to wish all of our readers, their friends and families a Very Safe and Happy New Year.
