LOVELOCK SPEEDWAY SEASON OPENER

LOVELOCK, NV (April 13) — On a weekend that saw a very windy and dusty Saturday Lovelock Speedway held its season opener, a two-day show. Unfortunately the car count was lower than expected but there was still some good racing.

Once the track was set during the heats Saturday it was time for the mains. The first one combined the IMCA Modifieds and the IMCA Northern Sport Mod classes.

The start of the Modified Main was as close as anyone got near to winner Shawn Natensdtedt. Here Walter Ball and Natenstedt head into Turn 1.

On the green Walter Ball challenged Shawn Natenstedt. Soon however it was clear the race was Natenstedt’s, as once a few laps went by, he was on cruise control.

Ball wasn’t able to finish and pitted. Back in the  pack only two of the Sportmods were able to start.

Mallory Evenson’s night came to an end when she hit the Turn 4 wall and had to be towed to the pit. Later Conner Metz had to fall out so both Sportsmods didn’t finish the race.

Shawn Natenstedt on his way to a runaway victory in the IMCA Modified feature.

Up front Natenstedt scored a runaway victory while Mikki Beuchat ended up a distant second.

The next race combined the IMCA Stock Cars plus the only Street Stock that showed up. On the green Jacob Dias apparently jumped the start so after the field was sorted out, the green waved again and again Brad Schmidt was on point.

After a restart IMCA Stock Car winner Jacob Dias passes early leader Brad Schmidt.

As the leaders exited Turn 4 Dias made what was the winning pass and started to leave everyone in his dust. There were a couple of cautions that slowed the race.

The race of the night was for second in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Here Cody Morris holds off a determined Marie Curtis. They finished in that order.

Behind the leader there was a race for second. While at times it was a three-way and briefly a four-way duel it came down to a couple of drivers from Wiinnemucca.

Lap after lap Cody Morris had Marie Curtis close behind him. Any mistake and she would be second. During part of the race Brad Schmidt, who also is from Winnemuca, joined the battle.

Jacob Dias right after taking the checkered flag as he wins the IMCA Stockcar feature.

At the checkered Dias scored the victory with Morris just able to hold off a determined Curtis as Schmidt ended up 4th.

After taking the checkered, Dias stopped on the front stretch, got on top of his car and acknowledged the fans.

After climbing down he said,  “This as like a last minute thing, we came out here. I thank my wife, my dad, my team although they couldn’t make it out as it was such a last minute. I can’t do it without them.

“The wind made it super tricky, super thankful for the man upstairs he really helped out. I kind of felt the wind coming out it would hit the back end so I had to adjust to that. Still a little tight but with the new car right height with IMCA I’ll get used to it.”

Then he thanked Intermountain Disposal, a new sponsor, Horrible Painting, NAPA, BM Fab, and KMS Racing, who built his chassis.

• Friday night’s show had some different cars. Alec Childs, who lives in Lovelock won the IMCA Modfied main while Reno driver Mark Hain was the lone IMCA Northern Sportmod racers.

In the IMCA Stock Car race Marie Curtis won with Cody Morris second while Jacob Dias ended up third. There was only one Bootlegger present and that was Austin Miller from Reno.

Next up in the region’s oval track seasons is the Friday-Saturday show opening the season for Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon. Then on Sunday the Northern Nevada Kart Club starts its 2024 season at Desert Park Raceway located by the Stead Airport.
