THUNDER ON THE COMSTOCK – PART 1

VIRGINIA CITY, NV (April 27) — Once again it’s the end of April and riders from all over head for the Comstock. The attractions is the annual Virginia City Grand Prix, one race many want to compete in and, if all goes well, win.

The Pros and Amateurs race Saturday in a 4-hour timed event. That means when the checkered flies the leaders might still be on the course as everyone’s place is determined by corrected time.

Before the race begins two head start positions are auctioned off for local charities. The number “0” gives that rider a two-minute head start while the number “00” is worth a one-minute head start.

When the two-minute head start was auctioned off Jordan Guess started before anyone else.

First racer was Jordan Guess, who had the two-minute head start. He finished 174th overall due to some problems..

Scott Maclas got the one-minute head start. The proceeds for the head starts positions go to a local charity.

Next off the line, with a one-minute head start, was Scot Macias. He would finish 124th overall.

After that all the racers are in lined up in rows of 10 and each row starts every 15 seconds.  The Pros and Experts are in the first lines followed by the Amateurs. There were 453 riders that took the green, 49 would DNF while 404 riders reached the checkered flag.

When the first row was launched Tanner Jacobson led the charge down the hill.

When the first row was launched Tanner Jacobson lead the charge down hill. Unfortunately problems dropped him to a 323rd finish.

Right after the start Zane Roberts took the point as he wanted to be a back-to-back winner. At the end of the first lap he was well in the lead.

While not in the lead as they charged down the hill from C Street soon Zane Roberts asserted himself and took the point. His goal was to win his second victory and earn back-to-back wins.

Austin Serpa is about to start his second lap as he used a strong run to end up second overall.

At the end of the first lap he was almost two minutes ahead of second place Austin Serpa, who was about two minutes ahead of third place Justin Bonita.

This trio would finish in that order and be the only between first and third was almost 16 minutes.

Only the top three finished six laps and Justin Bonita ended up third.

Behind third place Justin Bonita the fourth place rider was Marshall Belim, who only completed five laps but was the 40+ Amateur winner. In fact the next 99 riders only made five laps while the other groups made less in the time allowed.

Former winner Reece Honea charged from the 43rd row and almost made it into the top 20 with a 32nd place finish. He was the first 125 Expert to finish and completed four laps.

One hard charger was VC native and former overall winner Reece Honea. He decided to enter late and was riding a smaller bike. Starting in the 43rd row he charged his way to 32nd at the end and was the highest place 125 Expert.

Zane Roberts after making it back-to-back VCGP victories on the podium.

Now Roberts is a back-to-back VCGP winner as well as leading the National Hare & Hound series. However his current victory wasn’t easy as he admitted on the podium.

“It was pretty good out there, just wanted to get out front early. There was one hill that got me three times. I don’t go down that often but it got me three times.

“It’s a miracle l this thing is still together. I want to thank everyone that puts on this race. It’s an awesome event, so much fun I look forward to being here every year.”

Then he gave special thanks to his mechanic Ryan that prepared the bike. He then gave special thanks his mother, who retired on Friday.

When Austin Serpa took the podium he mentioned his younger brother only made five laps. Apparently the younger Serpa has his older brother in his sights.

Serpa also thanked his father and girl friend. He add special thanks to sponsors Sport Me, Carson City Motorsports, 395 Motorsports, Moose Racing, IMS Products, Precision Stabilizers, Arai Helmets, DTC, 707 Suspension.

Red Herrea, who finished 16th was the first Vet Pro to reach the finish.

Moving down the list Red Herrera was the first Vet Pro to reach the checkered flag after five laps.

Finishing 48th was 50+ Expert Andy Webber.

Coming home in 48th place, after completing five laps was the 50+ Expert winner Andy Webber.

Reed High senior Kylah Krupa was the first Woman Expert to finish. She completed four laps and finished 128th for her first Saturday as she’s competed two times before but on Sunday.

Kylah Krupa ended up 128th in her first Saturday race and she was the first Women Expert to rreach the finish.

After finishing she said, “The course was a ton of fun the dirt was great, there wasn’t too much dust. It was fast and flowy and all the technical stuff still had a good rhythm to it.

She thanked K2 Engineering, Reno Motorsports, for letting her pit with them and her pit crew.

Topping the age ladder was 60+ Expert Mark Duval. He completed four laps with an overall time of 4:09:53.

• After Saturday’s race there is another one to honor long time announcer Moto Mouth Bob Cavakis. The Moto Mouth Mini Team was created in his honor and some of these youngsters race motocross while others do off-road.

Cavakis always championed the youngest riders. As a result the Moto Mouth Mini Grand Prix is at the fairgrounds after the Grand Prix for the big bikes ends. Due to not using electric scoring on the results everyone was listed as an DNF. Hopefully Moto-Tally can correct this in the future.

In the Mini Race the overall winner was Blaine Zeddies while the Pee Wee overall victory went to Parker Coons. Moto-Tally has the full as well as the class winners.

REPORTER’S NOTE: Due to the amount of riders this report is split between two days. Hope to have the Sunday article posted late Tuesday.

Saturday’s results and class winners for the big bikes are posted at the end of this article. The link for the full results both overall and for each call can be found at, www.moto-tally/vegp/results.
