CAR MEET WEEKEND

RENO, NV (July 7) — Only able to be at a couple of car meets this weekend. Still recovering from last week’s surgery but getting stronger every day and looking forward to reporting racing again.

• On Saturday the Reno EVO Club met in the parking lot by the Keitzke Starbucks. Not a bad turnout considering the heat although it was beginning to slowly cool down

Mike Chheth described what the club is.

Mike stands by his Misubishi EVO. Chheth heads the Reno EVO Club.

“Just an EVO group that all get together and hang out. We don’t go out and go street racing and stuff like that,” he said. “Just get tighter and hang out with the EVO community. All cars are welcome, we have Dodge Chargers, SRTA’s, and Sabaru come out here.”

Then he explained what makes a Misubishi car an EVO is the motor.

Here is the EVO motor in Cheeth’s car.

“Its the motor. They have EVO 8’s and 9’s but the 10 is not a real EVO due to the engine,” he said.

Considering the late afternoon heat on Saturday there was a decent line up of EVO cars.

There was a small but decent line up of cars and another two showed up later. Hopefully next time it won’t be so blazing hot and more will be on hand.

• On Sunday Reno Cars & Coffee met by the Human Bean Coffee Stand located close to the corner of Moana and Keitzke Lanes. Once again not a bad turn out but as the day began to warm up people started leaving.

Only part of the line up of cars at the Reno Cars & Coffee meet.

As is usual there were cars from different eras lined up so they run from those restored to others that could use some work.

Small Japanese van at the Reno Cars & Coffee meet.

One of the unusual cars was this small Japanese Van. There was even an awing and the van is right hand drive.

There are usually a few motorcycles that show up for these meets. On this day they all picked a shady place under a tree and of them had an interesting bike.

The owner is Ross Erdody, who rides a 1972 Kawasaki H2 750 Tripe Two-Stroke.

Ross Edody stands by his 1971 750cc Kawasaki.

“Back in the day, in ’71 the manufacture Kawasaki thought it would be great to stick a 750cc in a 500cc frame and let people ride the thing,” he said. “Obviously it got nick named “The Widow Maker,” it was one scary bike and still is. But I’m smarter than the bike now so it’s a little safer to ride.

“Back in ’72 it was the fastest production motorcycle made and did 12 seconds in the quarter mile. It took five or six years for Honda to come out with a 6-cylinder 1100 and do an 11:87 in the quarter mile. This guy was wild.”

He and a few friends owned these in the 1970’s but he’s the second owner of this particular bike. He explained on the freeway if you knock it down two gears the next thing you know it’s flying.

He used to drag race it before restoring the bike. Back in ’85 at Riverside Raceway he lost the front sprocket in third gear he went through the lights at about 95 to 99 mph. That was the last time he rode it back then.

“Finally got around to having the time and the money, retired this about three years ago and loving just taking it out and showing it off. Some people know what it is and some people don’t,” he said.

Next week things move as Sparks Cars & Coffee will have their first meet of the month.

• Tuesday, starting at 6:30 p.m. is when Trucks & Tacos of Northern Nevada has their next meet. Location is El Adobe Café at 55 Arroyo Street.

Sparks A&W has another cruise in this Wednesday.

• Wednesday is another cruise in at the Sparks A&W. Should be cooling down by then and there will be music as well as other things plus cars to check out.
