RENO, NV (June 14): Warm weather set the stage for a weekend of big car meets in the region. They happened over in Loyalton, one in Carson City as well as a large one here in Reno.

That event was Cars and Stripes, the first of two meets benefitting veterans. Location was in front of the Sportsman Warehouse and was sponsored by the Iron Mafia, Nevada Car Coalition and Honor Flight. One booth was from the Combat Vets Association Motorcycle Club.

One estimate was at least 80 cars, pickups and roadsters on display. Many of them had their hoods up so people could see either a stock engine or what replaced them.

One interesting car was this right hand drive Metropolitan. According to the sign it was imported from England.

There was also an unusual vehicle on display. The airport fire department brought out its new unit so everyone could see how huge it really is.

Need to thank Ed Hughes for loaning me these two pictures. If you were at this show and want to see individual shots please check out his work on the Reno Cars & Coffee Page he also took pictures at the Sparks Cars & Coffee meet.

In one row there was a 1958 Ford Skyliner on display. It featured a retractable hard top although the luggage space was a bit small.

The owner kept the interior stock and the whole unit was a great example or a great restoration.

Another wonderful restoration was a 1947 Dodge Pick Up. Have to say the modern wheels and tires look great on it.

Looking into the engine compartment the motor is very clean and maybe stock.
Over in another row Ralph Langley had a 1949 Chevy Pick Up, one that has a long history with him.

“It’s been in my family since it was new in’49, my dad used it as he was a painting contractor in Los Angeles for a while. Was we moved to Carson he worked there an in 1962 I learned how to drive in it and he gave it to me and I’ve had it ever since.
While he’s from Southern California his wife Kelly was born and raised in Sparks and Reno.
“I had it redone, it actually had this color on it in ’65, it’s Nassau Blue from a ’65 Corvette. It sat in the garage for a few years then I finally decided to have it totally redone.

Al’s Rod and Custom is the one that re-did it. Frame up restoration, every nut and bolt is brand new. The engine is a Crate DZ6, General Motors transmission L65E an a12 bolt Chevy rear end.”
Asked how it rides he said, “Rides beautiful, I mean it cruises down the freeway at 90 and still wants to go. It’s really smooth and cruises straight”

Over on another row there was a beautiful 1932 Ford Roadster.
At the end of one row was a car owned by Jerry Moore.

Asked about it he said, “It’s a 1950 Plymouth Club Coupe. The frame is custom made, body is all stock original, new paint job, all new chrome, triple plated. It’s got a 392 Hemi motor in it, automatic transmission; the push button kind which is kind of unusual.
“Got a back up camera, creature comforts like air conditioning, things they never even dreamed of back then. All leather interior and in the trunk so it’s a pretty well, complete beauty.”

Asked how it drives he said, “Beautifully, like a Cadillac. Easy to drive, it does have a big motor in it, so it does have the get up and go. There’s 565 horsepower under that hood.
His wife Sandy added with a laugh, “He doesn’t drive fast.”

Among the restored entries was a 1950 green Willy’s Overland Pick up. One of the signs in the front was how many miles it was to Harold’s Club in Reno.

On August 22nd there will be a second Cars and Stripes in the same location. As usual a large turn out of cars is expected.

• Sunday was also Flag Day and around noon time several members of the Nevada Grass Roots Patriots met up at Northtowne parking lot.

Due to the heat and other events only eight showed up. When it was time they formed a line, with flags flying, circled the parking lot then headed toward Sparks on North McCarran.
