RENO, NV (June 21) — Father’s Day weekend was a busy time with car meets. It was highlighted by almost perfect weather.
• On Saturday the Wicked Ways Club had a Ride & Shine at Paradise Park in Reno. Besides the low riders even some of the Old Slammers showed up.
Among the exhibits were several chromed bikes with some sporting the club’s name.
Many of the cars were great restorations and were equipped with lifts. One great looking one was a 1964 Chevy Impala.
Even the motor had been chromed and polished for all to see.
It was part of a row of cars the owners proudly displayed. Most had their hoods up.
There was even a display of low rider toys for sale.
• Sunday began with Reno Cars & Coffee hosting its second show of the month. Not the usual packed turnout, probably because it was Father’s Day, but there still was so great variety.
Cobra cars were represented by a pair of them parked side-by-side.
Over on another row a quartet of Porsches were side-by-side.
Holding down the exotic class was a red Ferrari.
Asked about the car owner Jim Small said, “It’s a 1985 308 Quattrovalvole, 4 valves cylinder, European model, French delivery and was imported in 1985 and into California a month later. I’ve had it 17 years, bought from a lawyer that took it on payment from a client and he had it for about 20 years.
“My wife Vanessa was a big fan of Magnum P.I., which is one of the reasons I bought it. She loves it and never wants me to sell it. It’s all original, original paint, original interior, motor’s never been out of it. It’s got 89 thousand kilometers, which is about 50 thousand miles.”
He added it didn’t come with a radio but dealers installed them. The one in the car is about the late 80’s or early 90’s radio.
Next question was how does it ride and drive.
“Well it’s made for short Italian people and I’m 6’1” so I fit in it but not perfectly. It runs great, never given me any trouble. It’s a very fun, light car to drive so this European model has a little more horsepower than the American model.”
Not far there were three GM Cars all with their hoods up. Many times the owners want to show off the motors.
Sitting pretty much by it self was a Rat Rod. This one is based on a Rio truck.
• That same day the Bonanza Casino on North Virginia Street was hosting its annual Father’s Day Show N’ Shine. As expected the north parking lot was packed with cars and trucks.
There was also a long Corvette row. At one end there were banners from the Reno Corvette Club.
The National Automobile Museum was represented as they displayed their 1957 Elvis Cadillac.
Over at one side was a 1957 Chevy Bel Air owned by Carlos Harvey and its License plate says “STOCK 57.”
“I got it as a basket case, took it off the frame, built it up in a little two-car garage 20 years ago. Had to weld in the left end rear quarter panel, the rest was normal dings, dents and scratches. I rebuilt the motor and it’s a stock 283 with a two-speed Power Glide transmission.”
Asked how it drives he said, “It drives real well, not a race car as it’s 100% stock. I’ve had no problems with it.”
Among the cars on display was a fantastic looking Ford T-Bucket. Much of the suspension and even the motor had been chromed.
Not far away were two cars with flame paint jobs. One is a coupe while the other is a dragster.
The next show will probably come at the end of July as that one helps kick off Hot August Nights.
OTHER RACING NEWS
• This week the AMA Pro Motocross series moved to Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania for the High Point Nationals. Two competitors were Gardnerville natives.
- Lux Turner races in the 250 class and his 11th and 12th finishes in both motos put him 11th overall for the day.
- Lachlan Turner, his sister, was a bit under the weather but she ended up 2nd overall. The women race one moto on Friday and the second on Saturday. Turner still is the WMX point leader.
• This Tuesday, starting at 6:30, Trucks & Tacos of Northern Nevada will meet at La Fonda. Location is 4385 Neil Road.
• Also on Tuesday, from 5 until 7 p.m., it’s Dessert in the Desert. Location will be Bully’s in Carson City.
• There are three things happening on Wednesday night.
- At 5 p.m. PJ&CO, on Wells Avenue, north of the round about, has its weekly Bike Night where there will be great bikes to see as well as good food and drink.
- The Sparks A&W, starting at 5 p.m., hosts its weekly Cruise In. Location is 1311 Baring Blvd, across from Reed High School.
- Crazy D’s Hot Chicken, starting at 6:30, hosts its weekly Bike Night. Location is 3652 South Virginia Street in Reno.
• Davey’s American Racing can be found on Face Book.
He also posts schedules for various tracks and there related subjects.
