RACING & CAR MEET PREVIEW: AUG 20 TO 23

RENO, NV (Aug. 19) — More summer weather, more car meets, cruises and racing. Not to mention what’s on TV and Social Media.

CAR MEETS:

•• Thursday gets rolling around 8 a.m. at Kim’s Donut’s and Tea Shop. Location is 1328 U.S. Highway 395 North in Gardnerville.

• The weekly cruise to Chilcoot Frosty and Goodwin’s General Store is back. This informal cruise begins at 4 p.m. and runs until 7 p.m. Go north on 395 out of Reno, turn left on Highway 70, over the hill and by the turnoff to Frenchman’s Lake.

• It’s Thursday Night Thunder at Pinocchio’s Bar and Grill. Starts at 6 p.m. and location is 5995 South Virginia in Reno.

• Koyota Kruisers presents Cruisin the MUCC. Starts at 5 p.m. and location close to Dotty’s Casino in Yerington.

– The Thursday Night Cruise in Carson City returns. Starts at 5 p.m. and meet up place is Moundhouse Mopar, #5 Brown Street.

•• Friday begins when the Reno Bike Community gathers at the Maverik Station on the corner of Sutro and North McCarran. People usually arrive around 6:30 then at 7 p.m. it’s kickstand up and away they go.

• It’s Lowrider Cruise Night at El Original Tacos Tijuana in Sparks. Starts at 5 p.m. at 2201 Prater Way in Sparks.
• The Fernley’s Friday Night Cruise is back. It’s on Main Street and has a 6 p.m. start time.

• Around 6:30 p.m. at the Northtowne parking area Old Slammers of Reno, a vintage VW group assembles. Sometime a bit after 7 p.m., they start their weekly cruise.

• Starting at 6:30 p.m. Carson Cars & Coffee has Friday Night Dutch. Meeting place is Dutch Bros. Coffee at 1231 South Carson Street.

•• Saturday begins at 8 a.m. when several groups stage Cars and Stripes for cars, trucks and motorcycles. The function benefits veterans and the location is in front of the SportsmanWarehous at 3306 Kietzke Lane in Reno.

• Down in Minden, starting around 4 p.m., it’s the 2026 Main Street Car Show. Location is Minden Park on Esmerelda Street.

• One of the sweetest events of the weekend is Cars and Cream hosted by Handel’s Ice Cream. Runs from 6 until 8 p.m., cars park by the Starbucks and it’s a short walk to the ice cream shop. Washoe County Sheriff’s Office will be showing off their Special Vehicles Division.

• Carson Cars & Coffee, starting at 6:30 has Saturday Night Dutch. Meet at the Dutch Bros Coffee stand at 1231 South Carson Street.

•• Sunday starts at 9 a.m. when the 6^th annual Sam’s Club Car Show for a Cure happens. All makes and models are welcome, location is 4835 Kietzke Lane and this benefits the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation.

– At 10 a.m. Sparks Cars & Coffee has its second meet of the month. Location is 171 Disc Drive in Sparks, by the Starbucks. It’s a kid friendly event for families and car lovers

• This weekend another car group is going to showing some of their cars at the National Automobile Museum. It’s part of the Museum Cup competition and hours are 10 to 4 p.m. Awards are given out and one car is selected to compete in the final show for this year’s Museum Cup.

• Carson Cars & Coffee is hosting Sunday Night Dutch Bike Meet where folks can register for their September 5^th morning event. Bike Night starts at 6:30 at the Dutch Bros. Coffee at 1231 South Carson Street.

• Finally, a great way to unwind is the Modelo Sunday’s Cruise in Kickback. Starts at 5 p.m. and the location is 195 West Plumb in Reno.

RACING (4-WHEEL & WATER):

• The most unusual racing event is the 5^th round of the Wildwest Watercross Series. It’s a Saturday-Sunday event and I believe things get rolling around 10 a.m. each day.

• Location is the Sparks Marina and racers negotiate courses marked by buoys. They use a standing, well floating start and tear off onto the course they are using. 

• Out on the desert VORRA is outside of Yerington for the Stomping Grounds 300. The event starts on Friday and usually race day is Saturday.

• Summit Raceway in Elko has racing Friday and Saturday evenings. Things get going around 6 p.m. each night.

• Rattlesnake Raceway has racing Friday and Saturday nights featuring many classes of racers. Things usually start at 7 on Friday and 6 on Saturday.

• The Rattlesnake Karts race Saturday afternoon. It’s a 4 p.m. start for these youngsters.

• Up north Cedarville Raceway has racing Saturday. Featured are the West Coast Pro Stocks and Hobby Stocks.

• Saturday is when the Northern Nevada Kart Club honors one of its founders. It’s the 20^th anniversary Rick Jerome Memorial Night Race and they will use track #3 layourt.

• Gates open at 6 a.m., registration begins a 1 p.m. and the race day begins at 3 p.m. with the mains run under the lights. Some of the racers add lights to their karts for this event.

RACING & PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):

• REP Racing MX has a busy weekend. Riverfront hosts the first fall series BBMX event. Two days of practice and Sunday is race day.

• PCMX has a DCMX Ride Day from 8 until 1 on Saturday and Sunday, with those same times, is open practice. Sadly, due to problems with the water truck, the Sandbox in Fernley is closed again.

• E-Street MX park has practice from 8 until 1 Saturday and Sunday. They are using both the front and back tracks.

• MMX Racing also has a busy weekend. Saturday from 8 until 1 has practice on the Main and Kid’s tracks. Then Sunday, from 8 until 2 there will be practice on those tracks.

• The sand track is the site of Round 6 of the P.R.O. Summer Sundayz series. Friday and Saturday are for practice and Sunday is race day.

RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL)

•• Thursday on Fox Sports 1 at 3 p.m. has Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour then at 3:30 the network airs Speed.

•• Friday at 3:10 a.m. Apple TV has Formula 1 practice from Zandoort then at 7:10 a.m. its Formula 1 Sprint Qualifying. The day ends with the AMA Pro Motocross SMX for women from Budds Creek.

• At 1 p.m. Fox Sports has CraftsmanTruck Series practice from New Hampshire. Then at 2:05 p.m. the network airs qualifying.

– This weekend the NHRA is racing the Brainerd Nationals. Fox Sports 1 at 4 p.m. has qualifying Show #1.

•• Saturday begins at 2:15 a.m. when Apple TV has Formula 1 Sprint followed at 6:25 with Formula 1 qualifying.

• Peacock at 7 a.m. has Race Day Live then they start the race, probably first motos, at 10 a.m. Then at 12:30 NBC comes on with the rest of the AMA Pro Motocross event from Budds Creek.

• Fox Sports 1 at 10:30 has the Craftsman Truck Series race from Loudon, New Hampshire.

• The Indy Car series races on the streets of Washington, D.C. this weekend. Coverage on Saturday is split between Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2. There is also an IROC race and Fox 1 will broadcast it at noon.

• The IMSA WeatherTech SporsCar race is at Virginia International Raceway this weekend. On Saturday at 1:45 p.m. www.imsatv.com and Peacock cover qualifying.

• Fox Sports 1 at 7:30 p.m. airs NHRA Qualifying Show from the Brainerd Nationals.

• •• Sunday begins at 4:50 a.m. when Apple TV airs the Formula 1 race from Zandvoort. Apparently this might be the final Formula 1 event at this track. At 9 a.m. Fox Sports airs the ARCA Racing event from Springfield.

• Fox comes on at 9:30 with pre race then at 10 they broadcast the Freedom 250 Indy Car race. It’s another race between walls on a brand new course.

• Then at noon the USA Network airs the NASCAR Cup race from Loudon. I understand the series won’t return there next season.

• The day ends at 3:30 p.m. when Fox Sports 1 has the final runs from the NHRA Brainerd Nationals.

That’s it for this weekend. Be sure to get out and see a race, there is nothing like seeing it live. Also try and get to one of the many car and bike meets that are happening.
