CAR MEET BLIZZARD

RENO, NV (Aug. 24) — This past weekend was a car meet blizzard. While five are in this report there were several more outside of Reno.

• Saturday began with the second Cars and Stripes show by the Sportsman’s Warehouse. Several groups including the Iron Mafia, Nevada Car Coalition and Honor Flight hosted the event to benefit local American Veterans.

One of the tents was for Jim4 Heroes and Honor Flight.

The Nevada Veteran’s Coalition also had a booth. All accepted contributions. At the Iron Mafia booth raffle tickets and meal tickets for those registered were available.

Among the cars were four Indian Motorcycles. There is a group for those folks.

Among the cars and pickups there was this polished Ford Roadster. A great example of roadsters like this.

Over on row was a Chevy pickup with a long history with one family. Its current owner is Ralph Langley, a Nevada Air National Guard veteran.

Asked about the truck he said, “It’s a 1949 Chevy Pick Up 3100 and 5 window, Nassau Blue, ’65 Corvette motor. Totally ground up restoration done by Al’s Rod and Custom in Sparks, Nevada.

“I’ve had it since I was in High School in 1962 and my dad bought it brand new in 1949. Been in the family since it was new. It rides beautiful, it cruises beautiful, get up to 90 on the freeway and it wants to go more.”

There were some unusual cars as well. One was this “Baby” BMW with its interesting license plate.

Another was the beautiful restored convertible. It started life as a 1937 Ford 3 Window Coupe.

• This weekend was the final round of the Wildwest Watercross series. It was at the Sparks Marina and features jet ski racing around a marked course.

Each race uses a floating start. One person holds the jet ski in place until the green flag waves then the racers take off.

There are two splits in the course and the racers have to choose one of them. They also have to divert from the course and go around a joker buoy at least once.

There are classes for different ages. An example is this boy that’s racing in one of his motos.

Over two days racers will compete in four motos, two each day. While some races are runaways some, like this one can be close.

• Later that afternoon was Cars and Cream, hosted by Handel’s Ice Cream. Only one unit from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was on hand as others were needed due to the fires north of town.

Not all vehicles were four-wheeled. There were two different types of motorcycles on hand.

There was also a trio of Cobras. They are very powerful sports cars and in their day almost unbeatable racecars.

Any car meet is full of contrasts. At the other end of the row where the Cobras were sat a vintage, restored VW Beetle.

Among the exotic cars were two Ferraris. One was blue while the other was the traditional red.

Another exotic, one that drew a lot of attention, was this Lamborghini. Even rode on wheels that matched the graphic on its hood.

This was the last one scheduled for this year. Sadly due to a few problems this might be the last one of these. If those reading this want these meets to continue please contact Handel’s and let them know your feelings.

• REPORTER’S NOTE: Saturday evening the Northern Nevada Kart Club was hosting its annual night race, one that honors a founder of the club. Sadly due to the fire, and for safety reasons, the event had to be canceled after the first heat race.

• Sunday began with the month’s second meet for Sparks Cars & Coffee. Although the turnout was light there were a bunch of cars on display.

One was a beautiful white Hyundai Elantra N sedan. It was all cleaned up and ready to be seen.

The car’s motor was also cleaned up. Many owners keep their car’s motor ready to be seen.

Over on row there was a line up showing the nose and trim.

One car that was unusual, rarely seen actually, was a Toyota owned by Bruce Durgin.

Asked about the car he said, “We’re looking at a 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder. It’s all stock, changed the battery and that’s it. I’ve had it about a year now.

“It just turned 27,000 miles, one of the owners had it about 23 or 24 years. Maybe he drove it about 500 miles a year, so no body drove it much.”

Asked how it drives he said, “Very nice, it’s a very smooth car an I love it.”

Another car on display was this Subaru WRX. It has the logo of Bad Habits Restorations.

• Sunday was when the Reno Mustang Club had several of their cars at the National Automobile Museum. They were competing in the Museum Cup series.

There were several Mustangs including at least two convertibles.

One of the Mustangs was this restored 1968 model. The owner had some information about it.

At the end of he day votes were counted and awards handed out. One owner will receive the award that puts their car in the Museum Cup final show this fall.

The Museum Choice went to this couple and their 1967 Shelby GT500. Sadly the Museum didn’t include their names.

• There maybe two things happening on Tuesday.

• Trucks & Tacos of Northern Nevada meets Tuesday at 6:30 and they will be at Japlapenos Mexican Food. Location is295 Los Altos in Sparks.

• Dessert in the Desert is having another meet on Tuesday. Times are 5 until 7 and the location is the Moundhouse Chocolate Nugget.

OTHER RACING NEWS

• Both Turners, Gardnerville natives, were racing in the AMA Pro Motocross series when it visited Budds Creek.

• Lux Turner, who is a privateer in the 250 Class finished 7^th in the first moto, then 9^th in the second so he ended up 7^th overall.

• His sister Lachlan, who now lives in the Carolinas, won both of her motos and was first overall in the WMX events. It was a bit muddy this weekend

• This Wednesday there are five events happening.

• Starting at 4 p.m. Stone Valley Memory Care presents Cruisin’ Down Memory Lane. Proceeds go to help fight Alzheimers.

• At 5 p.m. Sparks A&W has its weekly Cruise Night. Location is 1311 Baring Blvd, across from Reed High School.

• Also starting around 5 p.m. PJ&CO, located at 1590 South Wells has it Bike Night. Great looking bikes, great people as well as wonderful food and drink.

• Down in Minden the Pizza Factory has another Cruise Night. They happen, starting at 5 p.m., on the last Wednesday of the month.

– Wednesday is also Bike Night at CrazyD’s Hot Chicken. All bikes are welcome, starts at 6:30 at 3652 South Virginia Street.

• Davey’s American Racing can be found on Face Book.

He also posts schedules for various tracks and there related subjects.
