RENO, NV (Sept. 21) — Great weather set the stage for two local car meets as well as another round of the Museum Cup.
• Reno Jeeps & Coffee had its second meet of the month by the Dutch Bros. Coffee stand at the corner of Longley Lane and North McCarran.
There was a quartet while owners discussed any modifications they done their Jeeps. Two had their hoods up so every could see those motors.
• Not far away, Reno Cars & Coffee had its second meet of the month by the Dutch Bros. Coffee near the corner of Kietzke and Moana Lanes. Unlike last time, there was a pretty good turnout of cars and trucks as variety is evident at these functions
Many times owners of cars will keep older ones going and at times give them new lives. One such owner is Brian Colonna that bought a vintage car and his son Aaron with him. .
Asked about it he said, “We’re looking at a 1950 Plymouth Delux. It was manufactured at San Leandro in September of 1950. It’s had fresh interior and fresh paint. The motor had been taken for a power wagon but I put a similar motor back in it.
“So everything on it is pretty well stock except the radio is a hidden 12 volt modern radio inside. Everything works on it, it’s six volt positive ground so fun car to drive, fairly reliable. It’s a fantastic car for me.”
There was also a nice Corvette row. Had everything from front to mid-engine models.
Not far away Steve Gordon brought his restored 1956 Chevy Bel Air.
Asked about the car he said, “It’s frame off restoration, my Dad, Chuck Gordon did the restoration actually up in Post Falls, Idaho. It’s a new 327 motoran he put some heavy duty springs on the back.
“Cut the springs on the front, put drop spindles on the front, disk brakes on the front and drums on the rear. And it has a TH350 automatic transmission”
Asked about how it drives he said, “It drives great, fun to drive.”
There were many different cars at the meet. Spectators had a large variety to see and admire.
• All during the year various clubs have been putting displays at the National Automoblie Museum. It’s part of a competition to see who gets their name on the Museum Cup and today was the last round before the final event.
This time West Coast Kustoms had their cars on display. This reporter had a chance to speak with Tony Lucero, the Nevada Chapter representative.
“West Coast Kustoms is an international car group, we support the car culture, any car, any make so far as what we go when we travel. It can be from a new Corvette to a 1920’s vehicle as long as their belief is in preserving the car culture.
“That being said we do have our annual West Coast Cruisin’ Nationals Car Show, Memorial weekend every year in Santa Maria, California were we’ll bring in over 2,000 cars for 1963 and older is what the requirement is and we take it back old school, like the old car culture.”
He also bought two cars and described one of them.
“It’s my 1941 Plymouth Coupe, it’s a radical build, it just won the Sacramento Autorama for Most Radical Custom. It’s got over 23 body modifications, all steel body, running a 360 Plymouth, it’s Chrysler head to toe and I’m very proud of that.”
Asked how it drives he said, “It drives fantastic, my mother when she was with us, rest her soul, had a modern day car, Magnum Dodge and every time she would get in my Plymouth she said, ‘this rides better than my car.’ It is an air ride.”
Later Lucero was awarded the Museum’s Choice so he might be in the finals.
Among the cars on display was a nicely restored 1942 Chevy Coupe.
Another was a 1950 Mercury Kustom. Even had some artwork displayed in front of it.
One of the cars was a very stock looking 1957 Cadillac. Even had a photo of it in front of a dealership.
The People’s Choice award went to Frank & Heather Rivera. They brought a 1970 Chevelle to the event.
On Sunday, October 4th, there is the final round. Who ever wins will have their name placed on the Museum Cup. The hours are 10 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
• This week there are two things happening on Tuesday.
- Trucks & Tacos of Northern Nevada mets at 6:30 at Chemas Mexican Food. Location is 184 Prater Way in Sparks.
– To the south the year’s final Dessert in the Desert meets starting at 5 p.m. at Scoop or Two. Location is 720 Highway 50 East in Dayton.
OTHER RACING NEWS
• Gardnerville native Lux Turner, who races as a privateer in the 250 class, said he was a bit under the weather when he raced in the second round of the SMX championship series. Despite this he wound up 18th overall.
• Club Rowdy had planned to finish this year’s drift series at the Reno-Fernley Raceway with a three day show this weekend. However they were unable to get the 40-car minimum and have canceled the event. Those that already paid will be sent refunds.
• Due to the fuel prices, and other things, Legacy Racing Association has canceled its Gold Rush, Virginia City to Tonopah race. The event was scheduled for the first weekend in October.
• Those racing in the BBMX series, you can pre-register for Round 3. The race will be held at E-Street MX Park.
• There is a week long event that started today. It’s the annual Redwood Rally 2026. Starts in California then goes up the coast to Coosbay Speedway in Oregon.
• Davey’s American Racing can be found on Face Book.
