RENO, NV (Sept. 27) — The end of September kind of marks the end of summer time. It’s the time of Street Vibrations and a bunch of car meets.
•• While much of Street Vibrations has moved to Virginia City, Reno Harley-Davidson was the hub of activity down here. And it all started Thursday evening.
The streets in front and to the side of the dealership were full of bikes. Even the parking lot across the street was full.
In front of the building were two long rows of vendors. At times there would be a band playing as well.
And of course there were many bikes for sale, both outside and inside.
The vendors were selling about anything including clothes, having helmets painted, decorating bikes and of course jackets and pants.
One thing people like to see is the Ball of Death. The show has two riders circulating inside together. Then later they have a woman stand in the middle where they roar around her.
•• Saturday evening, by the Sonic on South Virginia Street, the Reno Cars & Classics held its final car show of the year.
This time it was primarily one line of cars in the parking lot.
As usual it was a mixed lot of everything from modified to stock cars and a Jeep.
A Corvette anchored one end of the line by the Jeep. As usual it’s a varied group.
•• Sunday morning was when Sparks Cars & Coffee had its second meet of the month.
The turn out was pretty good and it took several rows to fit the cars and trucks in.
Speaking of trucks the vintage GMC pickup usually makes about every Cars & Coffee meet in this area.
Another car that shows up to many of the meets here is this white one that has all sorts of decals on it.
Asked about the car owner Kit Francek said, “This is a 1983 vintage class CMC race car, a Mercury Capri. It was originally a regular road car, daily driver and back in 1996 a gentleman turned this into a Camaro Mustang Challenge Car.
“I have done quite a bit of work, the biggest thing I’ve done is a full new exhaust system. I have BBK long tube headers, X Pipe on an axel dump and I’ve done quite a bit of work to the interior. Started stripping the floor to repaint that, new shifter, steering wheel, had the hood and cowling repainted.
“Gone through the engine bay, redone my wiring harness, valve covers, rocker arms, intake manifold, castor plates, all sorts of paint work in there. I have new brake ducting running into the front brakes.”
Asked how does it drive, he said, “It drives pretty good, it’s not ideal for road driving but it make it work. It pretty quick and nimble as well.”
There were four exotics and three of them were parked together.
One of them is this Ferrari 355 Spider convertible.
Another was was a Lamborghini STO.
Finally the third was a McLaren 750s that anchored the group.
Not far away, in another row was this Yacht Club BMW. It had an interesting paint design on it.
•• Anytime Northern Nevada Classics has a show at Baldini’s Casino the turn out is always great. This Sunday is was the 6th annual Hounds & Hot Rods show.
Upon entering there was a short row of four roadster and T-Buckets.
Across from that there was a trio of pre-WW II cars. On the left was a 1939 Ford Deluxe, while the middle was a 1936 Ford Coupe and on the right was a 1939 Pontiac Coupe. All were in great condition.
There were also a bunch of vendors selling about anything a person could want. This in addition to donating to the local ASPCA or other groups helping animals.
One beautifully restored car is owned by Mark Liggett.
Asked about the car he said, “It’s a 1950 Chevy Styline Deluxe 4-door sedan. Actually it was in this condition when I bought it. There was minor stuff I had to do to it like carpets, door panels and that’s it. It’s all stock, 316 straight six, three speed on the column and I’ll have had it two years this December.”
The he commented on how it drives, “It needs some front end work but otherwise it rides pretty good. I only use it for shows.”
Over on one row a Scout owner had toy Scouts kids could adopt for a donation to the ASPCA.
At the end of another row there were two vintage VW’s. One was a station wagon while the other was a Beetle.
Variety is part of any of these shows. This row has a restored coupe, a Mustang plus other cars.
Next event for Northern Nevada Classics is the year’s second Swap Meet on Sunday, October 4th at Baldini’s Casino.
• Tuesday, starting at 6:30 p.m., Trucks & Tacos of Northern Nevada will meet at Old Southwest Social House. Location is 1113 California Avenue in Sparks.
OTHER RACING NEWS
• This was the final weekend of the SMX Morocross Championships and two Gardnerville natives raced in the event.
- Lahlan Turner won the WMX Invitational. First time they have added this event to the show and she was flying, it’s her third championship this year.
- Lux Turner, who is a privateer racing in the 250 class, qualified 13th, was 12th in the first moto, then 14th in the second and ended up 14th overall.
• There are three things happening on Wednesday:
- PJ&CO has its weekly Bike Night starting at 5 p.m. and the location is 1590 South Wells. This is a great way to see some nice bikes, meet great people not to mention enjoy wonderful food and drink.
- This Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m., is the year’s final Cruise Night at the Sparks A&W. Location is 1311 Baring Blvd., across from Reed High School, and there will be a live D.J. as well as prizes.
- That same evening, starting at 6:30, Crazy D’s Hot Chicken has its Bike Night. All bikes are welcome and the location is 3652 South Virginia Street, #C1, in Reno.
