RENO, NV (March 28) — For over three decades one sure sign of spring is the annual RV & Boat Show produced by Lockett Shows. One part is also an Off-Road Motorsports Expo with several groups plus dealers that service that market.
Right after one enters the show there is a large display from RV Country. They have various sizes of trailers.
Heading further back 395 Motorsports has a variety of off road vehicles on display. Everything from dirt bikes, side-by-sides, quads and other things one can use to go off road with.
Next there are several racers used at the Bonneville Salt Flat event. That event is all about going full speed on the salt.
One of the stream liners is owned and has been driven by Dave Brant.
Asked about it he said, “This is a 33 year old streamliner that started life as a Lakester with 500cc engine mated into a Norden gearbox and went 100 miles an hour. Over the last few decades its evolved into what you see here, which is a J Class Streamliner with a blown 6 or 750 that we’re hoping to go around 270 miles an hour with.
“I actually joined the 200 miles an hour club back in 2013 a CBR 600 in there. I went 221.017 mph. This year Speed Weeks is August 1st through the 7th out there in Bonneville. My son will be there and this will be his third or fourth year driving. With the new engine we’ve been having some growing pains but hopefully we’ve got it all figured out.”
He added his son and father all have different middle names although their first one is David. As a result his father is D1, he is D2, his son is D3 and the grandson is D4.
Not far away was a display from Anderson Power Sports out of Reno. They had several off road vehicles on display.
Close by was Nevada Four Wheel Drive Association. They had a booth explaining what the group does.
Asked about the group Larry Calkins said, “We’ve really had a pretty good year with land use problems, with the administration that’s in there we don’t have a lot of problems. They’re problems with other states in the west and Blue Ribbon Coalition has been doing a series of law suits all of which are going to benefit us here in Nevada.”
Next in line was the UTV Conquest’s booth a group promoting an off-road event they’re doing. Kevin Arnold was manning the booth with handouts plus a way to sign up for the group’s event.
“UTV Conquest is an organization that hosts a guided trip through the Rubicon Trail. The trip includes your guides, who guide you along the trail, all of your food, as your meals are taken care of once you get into camp.
We have trail supporters as we have mechanics that will follow you along to make sure you can get in and out safely. In Rubicon Springs we have a no-host bar and some entertainment. We’ve got a band, ice cream eating and all kinds of fun.

Next in line was the booth for Hills Angels 4X4 Club. Their current president is Martin Galantuomini.
“We try to educate off-road enthusiasts, we partner up with the Forest Service, we’ve adopted the Hunter Lake Trail to maintain and look after it as well as try to educate and try to promote open recreation and keep awareness to road closures and keep our public lands open.
“We do several clean ups, we’ve teamed up with KTMB, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, we’re typically staged up on Sun Valley at Chimney and we’ll go twice a year with KTMB. There is a different clean up with Green Vibe on April 18 but not sure when our next one is.”
Once a person wants to go off road the next question, if they plan to camp is what to use.
There were rows of many types of trailers, from small, medium to large. A dirt bike could be attached to one of those
Various motorhomes were also on display. One of the larger type had a bed over the cab.
Motor homes of various sizes were on the floor. Several were standard looking.
One of them was very large and pretty heavy duty looking. Once again a motorcycle or trailer could be hitched to this for a family or group heading to an off-road adventure.
All in all the annual is show is very complete. While not shown here there was a large selection of boats offered.
Nice thing is that this annual show is a sure sign of spring and that summer, along with camping season, will soon arrive..
