RENO, NV (June 28) — Busy weekend with car meets, checking out a new female-owned auto shop plus the latest round of the Museum Cup. Those that like cars had a bunch to check out.
• There is a new female owned auto shop in Reno. On Saturday there was a female only car meet to help introduce the business to new potential customers.

Asked about the business owner Sunshine Haupt said, “I’ve been a mechanic as long as I can remember. I grew up with daddy in the garage, like every other little boy. Then when I was finally old enough to go to college I chose mechanics college.
“On the east coast I traveled from shop to shop, got tool boxes on wheels and lots of experience. I also worked on all sorts of vehicles, like classics, semi-trucks, you name it. I made my way across the country here to join my mother in Nevada and we opened Sierra Pink about a year ago.”

Asked what the shop offered she said, “Basic mechanics, anything that the dealership can do we can do. We’ve got an emphasis on classic cars because I hear that people in Nevada love them.
“They need somewhere safe and reliable to take their classic cars. You can take your daily to pretty much anybody but caring for your classic cars is special.”

She added the shop is open open Monday through Friday from 8 to 5. The shop’s phone number is (775) 528-4936 and the address is 1201 Kietzke Lane, on the southwest corner. The e-mail is ‘sierrapinkautomotive@gmail.com’ and the shop is also on Instagram and Facebook.

There were several cars parked at the meet as well as a food truck.

One of the cars at the meet was a Metropolitan. They were manufactured in England and sold here by Nash from 1953 until 1962. There were others in the lot as well and even a motorcycle.

• That same evening Reno Cars & Classics had another meet at the Sonic on South Virginia. And one line was along the building.

The other line filled the parking lot an had all types of cars as well as T-Rods, at least two pickups and cars.

Part of the line along the Sonic building had cars with their hoods up so people could admire the owner’s engine work.
• Sparks Cars & Coffee held its second meet of the month on Sunday. The turnout was pretty good although not as packed as it usually is but there was plenty for people to see

Over at the end of one row there were three T-Rods. They varied and one had some interesting spikes coming out of its wheels.

Variety is part of any Cars & Coffee meet. Not far away were two German classics, a vintage VW parked by side a modern BMW sedan

Speaking of VW’s there was a low rider Beetle in one row. It was vintage enough to where the front windshield could be raised.

One row had a very interesting Subaru station wagon .
Asked about it owner Phil Pugliese said, “We have a 1987 U.S. Ski team issue Subaru GL 4-Wheel Drive wagon. I just received the car Wednesday, I am in the ski industry, I work with U.S. Ski Hall of Fame and they made the connection to me with the vehicle. I’m curating this to keep it as original as possible.

“I outfitted it with some accessories from 1987, some skies, the buyer’s guide as well as the official hat that the had back then.
Buy what’s really cool is the synergy of this vehicle. I sold Subaru’s in 1987, it was my first year working with them so it’s definitely is close to my heart.”
He also has a ski related website that is, www.skitalk.com.

On the exotic side there was a Ferrari Testarosa. Which of course was red.

Not to be left out on the power side was a 427 Cobra. In fact it is painted in the U.S. international racing colors.

Not everything was 4-wheeled. Over by a couple of Corvettes, five motorcycles had cruised in. Both the see the cars and to let spectators admire their bikes.
• Sunday afternoon what when the National Automobile Museum held the next round of the Museum Cup. This time the Vdub Hub, which is a VW group filled the exhibit hall.

When one walked in there were four versions of VW vans or transporters.

There was also a row of Karmann Ghias. Both sedans as well as a convertible were featured.

And of course several VW Beetles were also on display ranging from stock to some decorated with various things put on them.

Marie Wikoff is the president of Vdub Hub, who also has a 1969 Beetle convertible, named Lady Bug, on display.

“So what I did is an update to the upholstery because I didn’t want her to be vanilla anymore. So I did the embroidery so I created an emblem that had lady bugs.”
Asked about the club’s future plans she said, “We’re here for out show today, we’ve got about 20 cars. In November we’re planning on occupying Exhibit Hall 2 and there will be over 40 Volkswagens in there. That’s just in the works today and we’re in conversation with the Museum director.”
At the end of the show, around 4 p.m. all the winners were announced.

Andy Baron won the People’s Choice with his ’70 Beetle.

Dennis Odgers won the Museum’s Award with this 1955 Beetle

Mike Tatrek won the Event Series plate with his 1968 Transporter Pick up.
Unfortunately the show ended on a somber note. Members Sergio and Jennifer Villanueva were heading the show in their 1965 Beetle but they lost their lives in a tragic accident. After the awards were handed out there was a moment of silence to remember them. The club may be planning something about them later.

• Once the sad news got out Carson Cars & Coffee had a popup memorial event to honor Sergio and Jennifer. The area by the Carson Mall will filled with people.
There was a memorial to them and the club will be giving any pictures and notes to the family on Monday.
