BATTLE BORN MX ENDS SEASON AT THE SANDBOX

FERNLEY, NV (11-18) – Battle Born MX ended its 2018 season here at the Sandbox or the Fernley/Wadsworth Lions Club Motocross Track. Nice weather highlighted a good day of racing.

Due to the fires in Northern California and a race being postponed there, several racers came to Fernley expanding the rider total to 334 for Sunday.

BBMX

Ryan Ferris not only won the 250/450 Pro Class but also the 25+ Class as well.

The big race was when the 250/450 Intermediate and Pro racers were on the track. Their motos are longer than the other classes races.

Reno’s Ryan Ferris scored a double as he won both motos.

When the second moto began Ferris took off with Austin Serpa giving chase. Lap after lap they tore around the track with the gap between them closing.

On the white flag lap Serpa apparently ran into a problem that dropped him back to a third place finish. Up front Ferris won the pro division followed by Austin Johnson.

Asked if he knew how close Serpa was, Ferris answered, “Well I felt him the whole race but looks like he went down on the last lap and gave me a little gap. The track’s getting good, its still a little hard packed, frozen in some spots it starting to work out pretty nice. They went and fixed out some spots, got the dirt loose again and made it so we could hit the turns good.”

Then he thanked his family and his father. Then later he scored again by winning the 25+ Open Class.

BBMX

The big winner for the day was Casey Carmichael as he scored overall victories in 125/250 Intermediate/250/450 Intermediate and Schoolboy.

Another racer scoring multiple victories, a triple actually was Casey Carmichael as he won in 125/250 Intermediate, 250/450 Intermediate and Schoolboy. It was a very good day for him.

There were several close races, especially in the second moto, which is the money round. Have a good finish in the first, win the second and a rider will either carry the day or be very close to it.

Since this was the final race of the season riders were not only securing class championships but also working to improve their positions in the final points tally.

One of the close races came in the 250/450 Junior group as winner Chris Miller was chased the entire race by runner up Tristen Mathisen.

Another close on was the 2-Stroke Open second moto. Leading the pack was Blayne Herrera but behind him first moto runner up Austin Johnson was on a charge.

Lap after lap Johnson closed the gap and they almost were side by side at the checkered flag. In the end Johnson, by virtue of two second place finishes won the day while Herrera actually finished fifth and first moto winner Chris Miller wound up second overall.

A rider’s combined finish gives them their final place in the results

Another close one was in the 85cc Beginner second moto where winner Luke Kunkel was chased the entire race by Seth Clark. In the end they finished in that order, which was the same in their first moto.

The largest class of the day was the 125/250 Beginner group as they had 31 riders and 30 were at the gate when the moto began

BBMX

Cole Palotas was the125/250 Beginner winner. That class had the largest amount of riders.

When the dust settled at the end of the day Cole Palotas was the overall winner followed by Otto Albrech, who parlayed a fifth and second place finish to give him the runner up spot while Hayden Fagundes reversed that order and wound up third.

Going through the age scale if there was a Methuselah award it would have to go to Mark Lane, the only rider in the 58+ Class.

BBMX

The most senior rider was Mark Lane as he races in the 58+ Class.

Dropping into the “youngster” but old group Larry Mulock was the 52+ Junior winner while the 52+ Intermediate winner was David Thomas.

At the bottom of the age scale the Pee Wee Beginner winner was Stephen Worrall while Abigail McIntyre won the Junior title. Jaiden Roberts scored twice by winning the Pee Wee Intermediate and Open motos.

BBMX

Jaiden Roberts won the Pee Wee Open and Intermediate Class becoming a two-time winner.

Moving up to the 65cc classes R.J. Sheehan was the Beginner winner while Hugwapi Minder topped the Junior Class and Rowdy Richardson was the Open victor.

All day there were battles around the track but at the end the next to last moto was for the 85cc Open Class. It was a battle between two young riders, who earlier faced off in the 85cc Intermediate motos.

BBMX

Chase Cannizzaro (13) and Drake Sahagnn had two close races. Cannizzaro took the 85cc Intermediate win while Drake Sahagnn won the 85cc Open contest.

Leading the charge was Chase Cannizzaro, who won the first moto but right behind him was Californian Drake Sahagnn. Lap after lap they tore around the track until the final lap when Sahagnn was able to take the lead and win the moto.

“It was a tough race, me and him were battling, I think his name was Chase, real fast,” Sahagnn said. “I was trying to catch him then he made a little mistake in the back so I just used that as my advantage to get around him.”

Then he thanked K&K Motorsports, his parents and Mike Metals.

The day ended with the second Open Big Bike moto. Steven Von Berckefelc would win and used his first and third finishes to take the overall. Chasing him was runner up Jay Hatchett, who used his fourth and third place finishes to claim that spot.

BBMX

The final race of the fall series was the Big Bike open won by Steven Von Berckefelc.

Now the season is over and the awards banquet will happen after the New Year. Later this week the final points will be posted at www.battlebornmx.com.

REPORTERS NOTE: There is a photo gallery after the results. Got photos of most of the winners there.
